TED Talks and their Sociological Nature

            There have been numerous TED talks on the upcoming technological innovations. At the same time, these talks seem to be more focused on changing the mindset of an individual concerning the key issue addressed in the talks. A good example of such a talk is by Lakshmi Pratury and Tim Ferriss (Timkina, 2020). The talks are not long, implying that one can fit their schedule and watch them and capture the content. The talk from Lakshmi Pratury is approximately 20 minutes long. This is the best talk, and it seeks to drive its key issue to the individuals listening to them. Worth noting is that the talk implies that the listener or the viewer might feel encouraged and change his or her understanding of the lost art of writing.

Lakshmi, the speaker who is an entrepreneur, starts by narrating the events that followed after her father died. She tells us that her father wrote to her before he died. Furthermore, she describes her emotions when she also found out that her father had also written a note that indicated his struggles, his experience at all instances in life before he died (Kinnaird & Laudun, 2019). In this case, we learn that one cultural dimension of the author’s background. That is before an individual passes, he has to inspire his or her generation by putting it down to paper. At the same time, she uses her father’s death to explore the idea of a legacy left behind when an individual passes on.

Moreover, she keenly ensures that the viewers learn the idea of enriching this legacy through writing down on something tangible. She further explains the importance of the art of writing and compares it with technological innovations such as emails. Here we learn that the cultural setting of the speaker supports the art of writing (“The TED Talks On The Benefits Of Writing,” 2020). At the same time, she declares and encourages the generations to come to incorporate the use of paper and notebook to express their thoughts at any time. She tells us that she will ensure that her son will have a notebook before she passes on. Also, the author seems to target those individuals who view the art of writing as a better way to express their ideas and feelings to people that they care about. Therefore, this is a fundamental idea of supporting written art with disregard to its limitations. To add to this, it is evident that most societal dimensions have continuously emphasized the importance of written art.
