Analyzing “Revolution” Movie
The “Revolution” movie was made in 1985 and was directed by Hugh Hudson. The film was made in Britain, and it portrays the historical events of the United Kingdom. The movie story was created and written by Robert Dillon, who seems too had been informed about the history of Britain, especially before and after 1985. The main characters of the movie are Donald Sutherland, Al Pacino, and Nastassja Kinski. The movie also stars Pacino as New York, who eventually is enrolled in the revolutionary forces in the United States of America. The movie also portrays the American Revolutionary War and how several individuals were being recruited to act upon the War.
The movie portrays the era of the American Revolutionary War that was taking place before they got independence from the thirteen colonies and how it was fostered by several factors such as the economic, political, and social dimensions. The story is all about Tom Dobb, who at first refuses to participate in the Revolutionary War but later joins it after Ned; his young son joins the army as the drama boy. After some time, his son is kidnapped by the British Sargent Peasy, who replaces his drama boys with Ned. As a result, Dobb tries to find him, and in the process, he is convinced that he should help the country in fighting for freedom. With the help of Daisy McConnahay, they vow to fight against the thirteen colonies and take them away as a way of seeking freedom. The movie explains some of the events taking place in the United States of America before they got independence from the thirteen British colonies. People had to fight, and others die in the process of seeking freedom.
From the “revolutionary” movie, various themes are expressed, which includes the theme of freedom, the theme of War, the theme of social life, and the theme of leadership. Freedom is the main theme that is expressed in the movie. During the setting of the movie, the United States of America had been colonized by the British, who established thirteen colonies. The colonies at first seemed to be the good people, but later they started practising the bad things towards the natives (Finlay, 1). This made the Americans become furious over that behaviour and started finding the ways in which they would seek for freedom. Ned, the son of Dobb, who joins the army as the drama boy, is kidnapped by the British colonies meaning that the Americans were facing tough times during the time of colonialism. As a result, his father, with the support of the American Army vows to fight until they get the freedom of his son and also for the freedom of the country.
The other theme that is expressed in the movie is the theme of War. The movie itself is about the Revolution War that took place in the United States of America, and that brought freedom to the country. Throughout the movie, the War is seen as the only solution to the problems which are facing the Americans. The American natives and the leaders had tried all their ways of seeking freedom and justice, but all went in vain until they came up with the Revolutionary War. All the American characters are fighting against the British characters. This means that the War took place between the American Natives and the British Colonies fighting for freedom and justice. In this case, the theme of War expresses itself, and the antagonism between the two parties brings in a fight that Americans finally are granted the freedom they are seeking.
The other theme that is highly expressed in the movie is the theme of social life. The movie shows that the Americans were facing tough times from the British Colonies. Some of the issues were characterized by social dimensions such as gender inequality, slavery, and racism, among others. Those dimensions made the social life of the Americans difficult, and they had to fight back for the freedom that would see them freed.
The themes in the movie are conveyed efficiently and effectively. The authors play their roles like they were present during the time of the Revolutionary War. Those who directly involved in the War had several negotiations with the leaders from the other parties. All the conversations in the movie portrayed freedom, social justice, and later the War embarked when all the needs were not solved. At the end of the movie, the Americans get their freedom and everything seems to have settled on the side of the Americans.
As it was mentioned earlier, the movie portrays the era of the Revolutionary War. The whole movie tells us that during this time, the Americans were facing a lot of problems from the thirteen British colonies. Their social life had been converted into the living hell. The British Colonies were taking everything that was good while leaving the bad ones to the Americans. This tells us that the main cause of the Revolutionary War was the brutality of the British that made the Americans demand freedom. In summary, the movie tells us that during this era, several people died while others were taken a left landless while trying to fight for freedom.
The movie also tells us about the popular perception of the era of the Revolutionary War. As per the movie, no person in the modern generation would have wished to live during those days. The people were volunteering themselves to fight for the others. It was also a matter of life and death, meaning that whoever participated in the War would either come out dead or alive. The British Colonies, in some cases, were difficult to handle, and they were using the strong weapons that the Americans (Teodorczuk, 1). The Revolutionary War lasted for more than seven years, and during that time, the Americans had the history to tell. Generally, the War can be perceived as the one that brought light to the Americans since they got independence after the War. The War is also perceived as the begging of the reconstruction of America and how it was named as the super-power country.
I have watched several movies, and I can use my experience to rate the accuracy of the “Revolutionary (1985)” movie. The movie has been acted well with the characters playing their roles perfectly. They explain the main ideas using the language that is recommendable for the movies. The tonal variations are also accurate, and the themes can be obtained without struggling. Even though everything seems to be accurate, there are some areas where the producer could have improved on. First, the author could have used the background music that portrays the War and incorporate with the one that portrays freedom. The movie talks about the historical event in the United States of America and, therefore, it should employ all the techniques to convince the audience on why should watch the movie (“Revolution.”). For that matter, I can rate the movie to 75% accuracy. The characters are good, and everything is arranged perfectly with the only few things which need to be updated as they have been pointed out.
The movie has successfully conveyed the main subject that is the Revolutionary War as it happened in the United States of America. The movie explores the various activities that happened during the War like the military brutality, social injustices, and other things which were facing the Americans. The movie also successfully conveys the message of freedom and how the Americans got their freedom from the thirteen colonies from Britain. The main reason for the War was to seek for the Americans to seek the freedom that the Americans had cried for a long time. The characters seem to be intelligent in their areas of acting, and that is why the movie simplifies everything for the viewers.
The history helps in modelling modern society. The modern people consult the history of what they should do as it was done in the past. For instance, the movie tells us that the Revolutionary War is a great event in the history of the United States of America. Those who were involved in the War were courageous and had in their mind that freedom must be exercised in the entire country. With their unity, the Americans were able to fight back the thirteen colonies and got their independence. From the story, the modern generation can understand the importance of unity when it comes to fighting back the enemy. Just as the say goes, we refer the history when predicting the future. Past events can determine what can take place in the future. The events such as Wars, Political crises, economic crises, and technological crises teach the current generation on how they can be handled in a peaceful manner. That is why it is concluded that history must be studied in the in preparing the current and the future generation on how they should deal with the events.
