Childhood theories and concepts

The development process of a human being is divided into two pertinent classifications, namely, physiological and psychological. Physiological growth is the development of the physical aspects of a person, while the psychological is the development of the mental functions of a person. The two elements of a person’s growth significantly determine the physical and mental strength or frailty of a person as they grow, which in turn depends on factors such as diet, exercise, and environment. Therefore, the essay will discuss the theories and concepts of childhood development while referring to the party chairs video provided.

Childhoodtheories

Childhood development theories refer to the approaches used to study the growth of a person, which is a complex continuous process to explore. A few of the theories are depicted in the video, among which are, the evolving self by Kegan, as well as Erickson’s stages of psychological development theory. The self-evolving theory describes situations where a person tries to make sense of an event. (xxxx)  explains that it is also the need to understand and respond to problems in a person’s life(xxx). In the video, children play around the room with different items. The items include scattered chairs, which two children begin to arrange in a line. One child carries the chairs, and one is plays on each new chair in the line. Later a third child helps to move the chairs to a tabletop. The evolving self-theory relates significantly to the children’s activities, whereby the girl begins to arrange the chairs to make sense of the scattered items. At the same time, the boy playing nearby joins and helps in also aligning to help make more sense after observing that the girl needs help. Additionally, Erikson’s psychological development theory refers to the distinct stages of growth for all healthy persons, as depicted when the younger child plays with a chair at the edge of the tabletop without regard for the ramifications of falling off the table and getting injured. On the other hand, the two older children avoid playing similarly, because they are in an advanced stage of psychological development; their understanding enables them to foresee the likely dangers. As a result, both approaches are essential in the study of a person’s growth since they elevate the understanding of childhood development.

Childhood concepts

A concept is a theoretical idea relating to a person’s environment. Childhood development concepts are fundamental in understanding children’s behavior at different levels of psychological and physiological development. The concepts assist in measuring children’s understanding of various occurrences and challenges in their environment. The party chairs video portrays two main ideas of childhood growth that elaborate on children’s motivation to problem-solving and organizational abilities. The concepts include instructional scaffolding and the organization concept. Xxxx (xxxx) explains the instructional scaffolding concept as the process of carrying out a task while following directives from a child-minder, a parent, or a teacher. In the video, an adult advises the child playing from the edge of a table tabletop, warning him of the possibility of falling to the floor. Secondly is the organization concept, which refers to the ability to analyze and come up with sequential ideas to carry out a task (xxxx). The transfer and arrangement of the chairs illustrate organization concept as the children first arrange the chairs in a line, then they arrange in rows on the table.

Conclusion

The evolving self and the psychological development methods, together with the scaffolding and organization concepts, are crucial for scientific measurement of a child’s development at all levels, hence facilitating timely intervention as it identifies some developing disabilities such as blindness. However, the theories and concepts may not apply to all children due to the environmental factors within which different children grow.
