Text summary
The article’s subject matter is the impact of the leather industry on the environment. This article explains that animal skin is biodegradable, but then daily production is what causes the problem. After production, wastes usually occur, and if the wastes are not given time to decompose, then they accumulate and start harming the environment. With the chemical processes the animal skin is subjected to, they become more and more harmful to human beings when disposed of. The processes include leather tanning, dyeing lubrication, unhairing, and finishing. All these processes, in one way or another, make the skin more and more unnatural.
The authors continue to explain that the first waste produced in the leather industry is in the slaughterhouses where the skin goes through a few processes. These processes will result in raw waste with hair. Trimming also comes up with salty waste, which is toxic to the environment. The author acknowledges that the leather industry still contributes to aggressive pollution since most of the waste is protein in nature. The importance of harnessing waste from the skin is essential since only about twenty-five percent of the skin is genuine leather. From this statement, we can conclude that the seventy-five percent remaining is waste from the different levels it undergoes during manufacturing.
In addition to all these, the authors give a solution to the problem presented in the text. They suggest that the people in this industry find alternatives to chromium- a harmful component in the tanning process. Also, the companies try and recycle solid wastes to decrease the number of wastes they generate.

The sources, in my opinion, are reliable. This conclusion is evidenced by the statistical figures used, which try to explain the point they are making further. With this evidence, it is highly unlikely that the source is biased. The text, like many, has a reference list, which has clearly stated where all the information comes from. All the topics in the references are in agreement with the topic. The article was published on the 17th of November, 2016. This evidence shows that the source is current since it was published four years ago.
Reflection
In conclusion, the article is relevant to my work since it tries to explain the cons of the leather tanning industry. This enhances an in-depth understanding of pollution. This source has formed the base concept of the research since animal cruelty in fashion starts with leather since it has taken the fashion world by storm. The paper has contributed immensely to the student’s project.

Ferreira starts by explaining how animal products have been used vastly in the fashion industry, especially in the twenty-first century. She goes on saying that although these uses get frequently discussed, the most critical aspect is left out. This vital aspect is the process behind getting animal products. She states that severe implications are rarely getting discussed, yet they might have implications for the lives of human beings. In the article, explaining the history of the use of animals in clothing is essential so that the readers understand where clothing came from. The author arranges her work in the other two methods. She strives to explain what the animals’ rights are and when they started to interfere with fashion. From this, the whole concepts start to build up. This is a piece of evidence that the work is highly reliable. Although she has no reference list at the end of her work, she has cited the relevant authors in-text who have current work. Since my essay looks at Animal cruelty in Fashion, Ferreira’s piece of work make a majority of it, because they talk of the same thing. With some work from the Guardian newspaper, it is highly unlikely that ther is bias in her work since the journalists researched and published the work for the public to view.
The article has helped me collect some essential keywords like the various animal ethics, which help in a deeper understanding of the work done. In addition to this, one expresses that learning has taken place.
General reflection
The two articles without a doubt have contributed immensely to my work, with the second article carrying more weight than the first one. This conclusion is because the second article talks more about the subject matter, which is animal cruelty. It is therefore correct to conclude that without the two sources, then the work would not be a success.
