A comparative account of two different types of Operating Systems

An OS enables a computer system to operate its software. Every computer, smartphone, or tablet has a built-in operating system that creates communication between the hardware components and software programs. Nowadays, computers have a Graphical User Interface (GUI), and it has made the usage of computers much easier. A few examples of operating systems are Google Android, Linux, UNIX, iOS, z/VM, and z/OS. Among these, iOS and Linux have been chosen as OS1 and OS2, respectively. A comparison between the two shall be outlined here.

OS 1- iOS

iOS developer is Apple Inc., and it is a mobile-based operating system. It mainly operates the mobile devices of Apple. It is compatible with iPod Touch, iPhone, and other company-related mobile devices only. It is written in Assembly language, C++, C, and Objective-C. After Android, iOS is considered the most popular operating system suitable for mobiles (Chien et al., 2014). The OS has been launched in 2007, and it became the OS for the world’s first iPhone. Formerly, it was known as iPhone OS, and it has continued to provide extended levels of support to the devices. The latest versions get released occasionally, and a new level of user experience has been ensured with every release. The privacy and security are tightened as well. Bluetooth and Wifi privacy enhancements features are worthy to note.

OS 2- Linux

It is an open-source operating system, and it is often compared with Unix OS. It is famous among the users for its easy-to-use features. Linux has been designed in a way that it fits along with other software by receiving requests and sending those requests to the hardware of the computer. The term Linux is another name for Linux Kernel (Barabanov, 1997). The tools included in Linux are the components of GNU. The installations of Linux rely on the GNU components. Free code is used for creating Linux. It means that the public can view as well as edit the system. The users having expertise and domain knowledge can also contribute to modify Linux.

OS 1 vs. OS 2

In the case of Linux, the OS is considered a family of “free and open-source” software. It is based on Linux-kernel, and it was built by Linus Torvalds. Linux has been aimed towards Single UNIX Specification and POSIX (Dietrich et al., 2012). In contrast to Linux, iOS has been developed for operating mobile devices only, and it can run only on Apple devices such as iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. The key features of Linux include multitasking, multiplatform, and multi-user. On the other hand, the key features offered by iOS are Apple Books, built-in encryption, strong passwords, and on-device intelligence. In comparison to iOS, Linux has gained wider acceptance and approval as it has been mentioned among 38 companies and 196 stacks of developers. The purpose of developing iOS is to make the user experience of the iPad and iPhone even faster and delightful. The purpose of Linux is to make it available for all kinds of users.
