A service Day in Saudi Poor Community

If I probably do a sampling In La Roche University of what they think of Saudi Arabia in terms of poverty, most will state things related to the vast oil field and oil is equated to wealth. If I get such answers, I will not be surprised at all because, as a citizen of Saudi Arabia, I thought most people could afford at least essential commodities. I was surprised back in May last year when I joined Insan Organization, and we visited a community in Riyadh with the majority of people struggling to get basic needs.

The Insan organization gives aid to the least privileged individuals, especially those who escape catastrophes like wars. I had an argument with my friend that it is impossible to find Saudi Arabian people struggling. To clear off the discussion with my friend Aziz, he told me that all I need is to get some finance and be prepared to give service to the people I will meet. On the day we went to the outskirts of Riyadh, and to my surprise, we found a community leaving below the accepted standards of living. In the next four hours, I learned a lot and cleared the thoughts I had regarding all the people. The money I contributed, and the Insan organization aid enabled us to purchase food and clothing for the community.

Before the service, even I held notions that every individual living in Saudi Arabia was independent and enjoying life. That changed after I interacted with the people I met. I learned that people who have the least are the most willing to help and friendly. You could see how united the people were, and their kids did not look bothered by the environment as they kept praying. Working with the community changed my view of the people I meet. On that day, we cooked and enjoyed eating together. One individual who touched me was a story of a man called Ahmed who was told me he had lived in the area for about five years and had high hopes of studying and graduating as an environmental engineer to help protect the environment. The most challenging moment I found myself asking was why in life, there is so much imbalance such that most clean hearted individuals have less compared to those with a lot of wealth.

La Roche University aims at empowering the community to achieve success and act justice and peace. After interacting with the people I met at the event, I realized that I should serve as the ambassador of the university. Empowering the community with everything thing that I have is my responsibility have like how the community has empowered and shaped me to face the real world and ensure I make the world a better place to live.

The event taught me that I am not where I am because I am the best person in that position, but I am being used as a vessel for change for everyone that I interact with within the community. I am the eyes of the community, and through my exposure, I should ensure I lead people depending on me directly and indirectly in the appropriate direction. To ensure that I achieve what I learned, I should be selfless and help those in need.
