A Summary of “A Message to Garcia” article by Elbert Hubbard (1899)
According to Elbert Hubbard, in the article “A Message to Garcia”, he states that it doesn’t require one to read a lot of books or to get more instructions to be loyal and trusted. When the president required talking to General Garcia and the only medium was through sending a letter, Rowan took the letter to take it to Garcia without asking any question. Rowan didn’t know where Garcia was but took the letter and left without asking any question. Rowan was ready to volunteer to do a tuff job where many hands were needed due to the loyalty of the president and his job. It is difficult to find a person who concentrates on his or her work wholeheartedly. If a duty is assigned to employees by their boss, many tend to ask many questions or focusing on being helped to do the task.
To gain trust is not easy as one should prove trustable, several individuals apply for jobs which they have little or no knowledge about. This kind of people can’t be trusted as the author questions whether they can be trusted to write a letter to Garcia. A good employee should be loyal and dedicated; he or she should be a person who can take a message to Garcia without questioning. He or she should be self-driven, ready to work efficiently, even in the absence of the employer. Employers don’t like the employees who are not consistent in their work or who are not ready to do their job but depend on the help of others. A person who loyal and trustable receives excellent appreciation for their employers as whatever he or she asks is provided. This is because there exist few such persons and if such a person exists every on what him to work for him.
