This paper explores the survey study conducted to show the association between mobile phone use and daytime sleepiness. The survey study involves students from California high school. Also, the data collected from the hypothesis will supplement the research in determining whether mobile phone use by the students had an effect on their educational performance.

The researchers administered questionnaires to students as a tool for collecting primary data concerning the sensitive research study. A survey was designed that contained questions concerning mobile phone use and sleepiness. A questionnaire containing Epworth Sleepiness Scale was modified to be used by adolescents and included questions about both the qualitative and quantitative method of mobile phones by the students (Carter et al., 2016). The modified ESS consisted of eight questions that were meant to assess the probability of sleeping in the following circumstances; while watching Tv and reading, sitting and reading, sitting inactive in a public place and reading, traveling as a passenger without a break while reading, sitting quietly after taking lunch and reading, reading while a car stops for a while in traffic. The responses to the questions were limited to a Likert-like scale with the following answers: high chance of dozing, a moderate chance of dozing, a slight chance of sleeping, and no chance of dozing. The researchers also included modified questions to assess the effect of mobile phone use by the students. These included the number of mobile calls made and received in a day, number of texts made and accepted, and the amount of time used by the students to play mobile games. The researchers selected students using a random probability sampling method within the school. They were expected to fill the questionnaires, which would facilitate the researchers in the decision-making process concerning the study.

The primary reason why the researchers decided to use the questionnaire method in their study was to enable them to analyze the data of the large population with ease.  Also, questionnaires are easy to administer, and most of the respondents are familiar with the format. I think the method used by the researchers was valid and would give them accurate data concerning the study.

There several methods of collecting data in a study, which includes interviews, observations, oral histories, and documents and records. If I was the one conducting the research, I would use the questionnaire method to collect data. I consider the questionnaire method to be an effective tool for gathering data related to this kind of research. This is because it relatively uses low costs to collect data from a large population. Besides, the method gives accurate data, which is easy to analyze.
