- According to the mother in the movie, her daughter Sarah was condemned, condemned to a life of misery. Explain the signification of this comment.
This statement from the mother in the film was very significant because while she was saying these words, Sarah happened to have been listening to the conversation. She was touched by the words and she was hurt emotionally. Being a teenage who had no friends and was always referred to as weird by her schoolmates, she went alone to the forest. She started to think of how useless she was to her family. She was tired and could not hold it again. She felt that she could not do anything at all in her life except for the crying. She had developed so many fears, and she only felt stupid with the pressure she had back at home and school. She could not bear with the pain anymore that is why she committed suicide.
- Comment on the introspective use of the director, on thoughts, revealed by Sarah with Gabriela’s lectures about her daily red. What do you understand about this method?
In her diary, Sarah reveals that the red ones were the only things that could make her happy after she stopped using the green ones. From my point of view, I think the red ones are the ones that Sarah used to commit suicide. Probably the green ones could help her cope with the situation, but now she has chosen the red ones that will help solve the miseries. The introspective use of the director in this part of the film was to bring out the literal meaning of the color red. Red in layman’s language means danger, and the director in involving it in the film wanted to show the audience that there was something wrong going on. In the film, we are shown Sarah just taking the red ones, but we are not shown how she died. We only learn about it from the teacher announcing her death to the class. Here now is when we can conclude that the red one that Sarah took was for committing suicide.
