In the modern world, assessment is portrayed as an essential path that every individual, regardless of whether they are a student or an employee, have to undergo. Primarily, the basis is lodged on the idea that is determining or estimating the value of their self-worth through a test, for instance, allows them to make appropriate decisions. In this instance, I am required to undertake at least two types of tests. These are the strength test and a personality test. Ideally, it is the ability to examine myself to find out how much progress I have made or whether I know myself intimately to justify my weaknesses and expound on my strengths. As such, undertaking this journey is necessary in order to improve myself not only from a self-awareness point of view but also to improve my self-competence in this competitive world, for instance. The following paper provides an in-depth look at what self-assessment is entails with further clarification of how self-tests are categorical in understanding my strengths, pitfalls, habits, faults, and core values.

Self-Assessment

For years, the concept of self-assessment has received widespread attention from researchers to psychologists and educators. There is a wide range of definitions that exist that range from analysis from a psychological perspective to an empirical gathering of why self-assessment is necessary. In part, assessment has been defined as ‘a wide variety of mechanisms and techniques through which students assess and possibly assign worth to their personal attributes through their learning process. Assessment, therefore, refers to the act of examining oneself in order to determine or estimate the value of their self-worth by using appropriate judgment. In most cases, the examination is self-induced, meaning that I have to undertake the rigorous testing not only to understand the psychological but also to comprehend the physical aspects of myself. With respect to self-assessment, the purpose is to provide aid to an individual in expanding their knowledge with regard to abilities and ways on how to improve them without the need for a performance appraisal. In other words, it subjects an individual into an assessment criteria such as ‘what are my strengths and what are my obstacles.’ Hence, self-assessment is a critical venture recommended for anyone who seeks to understand the epitome of their being from all aspects.

The importance of self- assessment is expansive, with the underlying significance being developing professional and personal development. Research concurs that self-assessment not only seeks to measure confidence levels in a person; it also seeks to measure capabilities. For example, the strength test was designed with the intention of examining my personal strengths alongside weaknesses. A free aptitude test, for instance, is a mandatory test to undertake for a student. The main scope of the test is to examine whether I am capable of certain thinking capacities and whether I understand myself from a long-range of activities on what my strengths have been.  Hence, the importance of self-assessment is to engage with oneself in comprehending what their inner faults and attributes are.

Comprehensively, the importance of self-assessment is a way of grading themselves according to set standards of performance. The idea behind self-assessment is the need to measure up to set standards of scoring in every test. Using self-assessment does not allow me to assess myself using my judgment qualitatively, but, I do so through a pre-set formative assessment agenda. A meta-analysis study conducted by Pandero et al. (2017), determined that self-assessment is a fundamental component of formative assessment since. It allows a student, such as me, to close the gap between the current performance and the desired standard per se. Hence, self-assessment is not only an interesting and exciting option to know one-self, but it is fundamental to learning and researching more about oneself.

Additionally, self-assessment permits a student to be sure and confident about their capabilities. In most cases, as a student, there is a lot of fear and resentment when it comes to comparing oneself to others. For instance, not acknowledging one’s strength can be a great hindrance since I am always inclined to highlight my weaknesses against set social standards. The proverbial take on how better performing or extroverted students have better advantages against the introverted and average performing students can be disheartening. Therefore, the importance of self-assessment allows one to look from within and not conform to societal standards.

Self-assessment is crucial to illuminating self-examination, which allows a student, or any other individual, to make the correction and improve on their abilities quickly. A further look into the type of tests that exist, researchers who conducted thorough psychological and emotional assessment understood the underlying factors in humans. Essentially, finding the common features between man can be a daunting task but exciting at the same time. It is for this reason that self-assessment allows one to find ways on how to describe themselves. For instance, strength tests allow me to define my inner abilities, which are labeled based on a universal gauge or test on what I am. Equivocally, it also means that I have the capacity to address my inner weaknesses. Therefore, the purpose of self-assessment is enhancing my capacity building by allowing me to acknowledge my personality and abilities as well as pitfalls.

With respect to self-assessment, the evaluation process provides more students in selecting their occupations or educational programs based on the assessments done. Pandero et al. (2017) study on self- assessment on more than 91 students revealed that assessment of one’s personality traits and character traits revealed an underlying understanding of what they were destined to do. As noted above, the purpose of self-assessment is to provide an in-depth comprehension of one. Nonetheless, it not only provides personal understanding, but it also provides professional articulation. As a result, self-assessment permits a person to acknowledge what they are good at. For instance, if I find out that I am anti-social, it tells me that probably marketing is not my profession. The reason is that it is well known that marketing requires a friendlier appeal in order to make sales. If there is no appeal to this, then I have limited undertaking on what to do.

Finally, self-assessment provides a more intentional platform that allows someone to improve upon their weaknesses or pitfalls. Self-assessment’s main appeal is that it allows me to gather my thoughts with regard to knowing how to improve myself, such as understanding what my core values are and how I will have managed to improve myself. For instance, core values are critical to one’s existence. It not only provides me with a moral compass, but it also provides me with a generalized overview of what I need to work on, such as improve on my bad habits. If I have a bad habit of always procrastinating, then it essential I work on how to be disciplined and work on time. It not only improves on the concept of self-supervision; it allows me to know how to handle time, also known as time management. In summary, self-assessment is critical to each person, including me, as it is regarded as the best platform to assess oneself and improve on certain areas.

  1. Conduct Self-Assessment

The following describes the recent online tests I undertook with regard to strength assessment and personality test. I conducted two types of tests. For the strength assessment, I opted for the Free Aptitude test for Strengths and Weaknesses, while for the personality test, I did the Jung Personality test and the Big Five Factor test.

  1. The Big Five Personality Test

The Big Five Personality test is regarded as one of the respected five-factor models. It not only determines the five major dimensions of personality, but it also defines personality differences. The framework is complex, however, simplified into assessment on openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism. In general, the test utilizes a factor analysis to analyze the personality traits of an individual. In this case, it provided a description of some of the personality factors I possessed that I did not know within me. For instance, I discovered that I am an open and social person. When I asked my parents whether I am that type of person, they acknowledged that I had possessed that trait ever since I learned to walk. I also found out that I am extroverted, and upon asking my siblings whether I possess such traits, their answers were contentious.  My eldest sister acknowledged that I do possess such traits when the need arises, but my younger brother seemed to contradict this, indicating that I often prefer being alone in social gatherings. Ideally, the Big Five-factor test is regarded as one of the best given that it is set from a universal concept of personality analysis. For instance, throughout the test, I realized that my strength in extraversion and assertiveness were constantly being assessed.

The main reason I decided to take on the big five-factor test is due to the provisional comprehension between personality characteristics and academic behaviors. According to studies, the model of tests is defined by several independent factors, including descriptors of human beings’ behavior. For instance, it is described that the test is modeled to assess both ends of each factor. For neuroticism, the aspect of volatility and withdrawal is assessed, whereas, for extroversion, the aspect of assertiveness and enthusiasm are also tested. The need to assess both ends of each factor is what drew me to this test, which allowed me to gauge both sides and know which is more transparent and more apparent compared to the other. Therefore, the big five-factor test provided me with a more in-depth analysis of my personality, which allowed me to articulate more of me in the end.

  1. Jung Personality Test

The Jung personality test is described as a manifestation of Carl Jung’s personality theories alongside Myers Briggs. By taking the test, I was subjected to 16 pre-set questions on Jung personality types. The reason I chose this test is that it is provided a more insightful assessment of my day to day interactions. For instance, I was subjected through rigorous testing of my relationship with my friends, families, and strangers. There were a lot of similarities with the Big Five Factor test; however, with this type of test, I was indulged more with regard to how I view myself alongside how I treat others. For this reason, therefore, this is why I chose this test.

The Jung Personality test is set according to psychological input. In developing the model, the researchers indicated that understanding the personality traits of a person regarded comprehending the strengths and weaknesses of the person. From a psychological perspective, this is regarded as self-growth. Knowing what is inside oneself from an outward look permits one to acknowledge what are their greatest strengths and what their pitfalls are. In most cases, psychologists utilize the test as a means of gathering information about an individual. Therefore, the use of the Jung Personality Test is not only regarded as critical to knowing oneself but crucial to acknowledging what to improve on and what to sustain.

Finally, the reason I chose the Jung Personality Test is that they provide a complex yet simplified conglomerate of the personality type. Similar to Myers Briggs Test, the Jung Personality Test determines a generalized model of a personality type. The personality model is based on 16 different types of personalities. The overall ideology is that it provides both a sense of self-judgment and self-view. For instance, the symbol ‘I’ means that I could be introverted, while the letter ‘E’ means that I could be extroverted. The results of the test indicated that I possess an introvert, which seemed to contradict my initial test result from the Big Five Factor test. Upon asking my friends who I have known for more than five years, they seemed to agree and disagree at the same time. Their generalized conclusion was that I often subjected my introvert to how I felt throughout the day. For instance, Mary, my friend, explained that I preferred staying by myself during large social gatherings but tended to be more outgoing and social within a familiar social gathering. There are other different types of personalities portrayed based on judgment and perception, including intuition. This is primarily why I chose this type of test since it not only gives me on the concept as does the Big Five Factor, it gives a different version of myself from determining whether I am an introvert or an extrovert or whether I am intuitive or not. Having such a criterion at hand allows me to know more of myself.

  1. Free Aptitude test for Strengths and Weaknesses

As the name suggests, the purpose of the test was to engage with my strengths and weaknesses. The Richard Step strengths and weaknesses test is determined as a tool that allows me to better understand myself with regard to who I am and how much I need to grow. The purpose I chose this test is because the test questions seemed simpler and straightforward compared to the other strength tests. For instance, it asked me about my personal development goal and whether I indulge myself in a lot of personality growth. Upon taking the test, I discovered that my greatest strength is in self-actualization, whereas my greatest weaknesses are in self-deprivation. Further inquiring whether I possess such attributes from my friends, there were a lot of argumentative conflicts, and this indicated that my friends also did not know whether this was true or false. Again, I am quite skeptical about this test but, taking it allowed me to articulate what was lacking and what was evident.

Additionally, the reason I opted to take on this test is the fact that it motivates me to know something more about myself. By highlighting my strengths and my weakness, it prompted me to research more about the terminologies used and how I could better myself. In other words, I could describe the Free Aptitude test for Strengths and Weaknesses as a self-motivation quiz that lets me get more indulged with my aptitude and weaknesses. Furthermore, it allows me to have self-awareness and have a life direction. For instance, I realized that my greatest weakness was subjection to social pressure. It allowed me to understand that I need to possess more integrative core values, such as being my own person and having my own self-worth. Therefore, the Free Aptitude test for Strengths and Weaknesses provides me with a more in-depth awareness of myself, and this is one of the greatest strengths of the test compared to the other strength tests.
