Addiction
Addiction has been a sore subject for a long time. Botticelli, Hari, and Nadelmann shed light on the extent of the issue and what can be done to help the people. Botticelli discusses how the government has developed policies that provide medical coverage and allow for preventive measures, early detection, and recovery support. Hari, on the other hand, points out how meaningful human connections are in assisting addicts to recover. Nadelmann emphasizes more on decriminalizing addiction and focusing more on helping people. Decriminalizing addiction is one thing they all agree on and, instead, want policies developed to help the victims. The Office of National Drug Control Policy, in conjunction with the Affordable Care Act, work to provide better and affordable care to addicts. The policy protects the communities from drug traffickers, and the act allows addicts access to primary level care and at affordable rates.
The policy has proved to be beneficial to addicts and their families. However, the insurance plans do not provide comprehensive coverage of the addiction. They do not all provide coverage of the full array of potential drugs or behaviors. The policy also is still biased as it benefits people with higher incomes. Even though it covers many addiction-related services, there are still other out-of-pocket costs one has to pay.
Addiction is more of a connection issue. When we have meaningful connections with other people, we reduce cases of addictions. Having a system, therefore, that helps drug addicts to reconnect with the world not only allows them to leave behind their habits but also keeps them out of prisons or inhospitable conditions.
