Admission Essay

            I could not let myself walk across a stage full of people and attended by celebrities from all walks of life a few years from the time I joined my first year in high school just to receive my high school diploma alone without any additional certificate. Because I knew I was supposed to look back when I will have graduated in high school and started a new life somewhere to think of what I achieved not only in academics but also in other activities. But I was not talented in games, my big dilemma. I knew how extracurricular activities were beneficial to students when my sister got a scholarship just because she was good in athletics. Although I was not good in field games, I knew that I could fit somewhere. And truly I discovered that “somewhere” when I joined the school choir as a second year student. Singing became my passion indeed. I have participated in singing in different church choirs for the past two years and for sure, I have realized much about music.

Music is an essential aspect in everybody’s life regardless of the type of music he/she likes. Some people are much to the gospel music while others are for secular music. But the best thing about music is its ability to capture the feelings of an individual. Many people have testified that music is a food for the soul. In the liturgical arena, music helps us to open our minds, shed our sorrows and brings us closer to God especially the gospel music. As a people- oriented Professionalist, singing as my only extracurricular activity has truly proved to me that am in the right track towards my profession. It improves the lives of people. For instance, research has shown that music plays a crucial role in brain health especially as one grows old. Music exercises the brain, thus leading to a better memory and mental acuity.

As I mentioned earlier, music makes people feel happy. Studies have also shown that music causes the brain to release dopamine, a feel-good chemical, which prompts emotions of happiness, excitement and joy. Music also helps to reduce anxiety and depression. Again music helps to strengthen the body’s immune system and minimizes pain by reducing the stress hormone cortisol, which weakens the immune system and causes declines in memory and learning. Through the power of music which has had a significant effect on my life, I can attest to its intangible benefits on the psyche, mood, pain and quality of life of all humans and that is my goal in life. Seeing people being happy always under different life circumstances!

Just as I mentioned earlier in this paper, it has been my desire to be in a position of changing people’s lives to a better position one day. The feeling has driven me to make a choice of undertaking a pharmacy program. Just to keep my dream alive. And Pharmacy being a people-oriented profession and a vital component of the health care system, I know I will play a crucial role in today’s healthcare system by providing medication therapy management and in promoting people’s health and wellness. The pharmacist plays a significant role in healthcare management through the system and individually.

Medical care is something that I am knowledgeable about due to my several years of job experience as a registered nurse. Since 2007, I have provided general nursing duties in a variety of healthcare facilities from sub-acute and long term care units to intensive care units. The transition from registered nurse to pharmaceutical care will be a challenging one, yet my duties and responsibilities to upholding healthcare standards for individuals will remain the same.

In my opinion, the ultimate goal of the pharmacy professional is to meet the needs and improve the quality of life of the patient through assessing, monitoring, initiating and modifying medication use to ensure that drug therapy regimens are safe and effective and this has been my goal. I am excited to be a part of this noble profession. My desire to help people and to contribute to alleviating human suffering greatly influenced this decision. As a registered nurse with more than ten years of experience in direct patient care, I understand the necessity of human connection and compassion. Dealing directly with patients and aiding them in ensuring the best health outcomes–physically and mentally–it is my hope that I can make a difference, improve or even save someone’s life through my work. My undergraduate degrees in microbiology and nursing as well as my ten years of experience providing direct patient care in medical/surgical and intensive care units has equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in the PharmD program.

I have excelled in my previous academic pursuits and it is my desire to continue to challenge myself with the rigorous Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Alberta, and eventually with the demanding pharmacy profession. My ultimate goal is to become a competent and skilled pharmacy professional with a lifelong commitment to learning and to providing quality patient outcomes. The faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Alberta is reputed around the globe as a leader in pharmaceutical education. I am proud to be a part of this faculty, and I am convinced that the University of Alberta will help me achieve my future career goals.
