Americans are a people who have originated from many nations. It is for this reason that America is often referred to as a melting pot or a mixed salad of many peoples, customs, languages, nationalities, religions, cultures etc. It is a land of both extremes and everything in between. But despite all the differences, or perhaps because of the differences, certain characteristics have developed with time that can now be called truly “American;” characteristics that, in themselves, distinguish Americans from other people. One of the main adjectives that can be used to describe Americans, in general, would be “individualistic.” What is individualism and how does it relate to the attainment of the American Dream?
