Amish Culture

For participant observation, the ideal culture that I would be interested in is the Amish culture, whose people live a comfortable life. The aspect of the Amish culture that I will be most interested in is the fact that they shun away from the use of modern technology. They do not want to adapt to the new trend of technology that the world appreciates, and this is so fascinating(Johnson 2017). These people have prohibited the use of photos. Therefore, they always seek land away from urban areas. Most of the groups in the Amish culture forbid their members from owning a computer, radio or television, tapping electricity from the available public utility lines, purchasing automobiles, using farm machinery that is well propelled, and attending either high school or college(Johnson 2017). They cannot even join the military.

The characteristics of my personality that would positively contribute to my fieldwork is that I am a reserved person. I am not the kind of person who likes taking photos like most of my classmates to do in school. Many people are on these social media sites, and they take photos to post them for various reasons(Johnson 2017). I do not like to have a public life. I also love to interact with people and learn new things about their culture. However, what will hinder participant observation is that I love using my phone so much. I love communicating with my friends and keeping in touch with my family through the family groups in Whatsapp. I may find myself in a situation where I have to use my phone amid the participant-observation..

The ethnocentric belief that it would be difficult to overcome is that children here do not go past the 8th grade. At the age of 14, they have the right to end their schooling. The beliefs and practice in the American culture that would be the hardest to understand are how their women can file for divorce cases and get married again.
