ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVES FOR A LOW-COST TRANSPORTATION
Catholic University requires a new transport system for its students who live off-campus, at Maryland. Analyses of alternatives enable us to select the most cost-efficient, reliable, and affordable mode of transport. Factors to consider are distance, fueling costs, reliability of the method, and the number of students transported daily. It is also essential to familiarize with the locations by touring the neighborhood to check available transport methods.
The most viable options are by either rail or road. The school’s proximity to a rail station makes trains an alternative. On the other hand, highway road offers additional options such as buses or cycling. Despite trains being reliable with specific arrival and departure schedules, it is not a flexible or cost-friendly option for the school. Cycling offers a cheaper, affordable, and traffic friendly alternative. However, it is not cost-effective for the school to provide each student with a bicycle, and safety is not guaranteed. Another option is to use a bus. It would be able to carry many students at a go, and it is cost-effective and reliable.
The criteria of analysis generally include reliability, cost-effectiveness, affordability, and flexibility of the mode of transport. The method used should be available at all times when needed to address reliability and flexibility needs.it should also be affordable in terms of maintenances and acquisition.
