Analysis of the film Thank You for Smoking In Relation To Course Contents.
The film Thank You for Smoking is a 92-minute production, which is an adaptation of a storybook of a similar title that explored a subject of drug use and lobbying. The tales revolve around the activities of Nick Naylor, who serves as a spokesperson for the Academy of Tobacco Studies. Jason Reitman’s 2005 production explores the Naylor’s interaction with other lobbyists supporting companies producing commodities that endanger people life and personalities opposing drug usage as well as actions of such companies. The characters career path exposes him to dilemmas in dealing with controversial health topics. Naylor grapples with difficulty safeguarding the financial interest of the companies he represents and encouraging responsible behavior simultaneously. The tribulations that ensure in the career path facilitates an introspection of the themes on drug abuse, physical health, sexual morality and many other topics related to the contents covered on the class on health and the quality of life.
The issues of health from the course projects through the challenges that Naylor faces in duties as a spokesperson of a cigarette firm. I identified concern on the use of drugs that connect to the topic of discussion on lifestyle behavior affecting people’s health as a health and quality of life issue (Reitman, Buckley, Eckhart, Bello, Bright, Brody, & Duvall, 2005). I identified the connection after watching Naylor’s reaction in his decision to unite with the likeminded person in forming a group that they satirize as “Merchants of Death” upon the realization that the companies they serve lead to health complication in the society. The fact that the lobbyist for alcohol use are aware of the mental health problems associated with the habits they promote connects to subject on health and quality of life. The same applies to Naylor, who desires a healthy life but prioritizes corporation interest (Yulfira, 2018). He contradicts the duties of a researcher who are aware of the role of drugs use on people’s health. As per the claim of Finisterre that cheese is contributing to cholesterol-related deaths, the activities of corporations endangers the health of the public.
The film addresses the dilemma in the life of Naylor in advancing acts despite the knowledge that the mission endangers the health of the public. He is pursuing an interest that differs with the values he seeks to instil in the son. Naylor serves corporations that violate the ethical code of conduct. The development in the story leads to a confrontation with the politicians (Prescott, 2006). The criticism elucidates the nature of the legality of the behavior of the lobbyist working for corporations responsible for the surge in ailments related to the use of their products. The director integrates humor in the discussion on ethical issues to highlight the challenge of resolving the subject. Naylor’s relationship with Heather Holloway is also an act that examines the morality of the characters since the engagement leads to an exposure that defames people reputation. The situation forces Naylor to apologize for the wrongs.
The uniqueness of the movie in terms of presentation whereby the director incorporates themes on health and quality of life to discussion on drug use guided the selection of the film. I equally considered the creativity of the characters addressing day-to-day issues that define the relationship between lobbyist and activist without eliciting bias. The contents of the film directly relate to the accounts describe in class on health and quality of life. An instance is a description of Naylor’s commitment to the son’s progression in research that benefits the society, but he promotes the interest of drug manufacturing companies. The ideas in the text can help analyzes healthcare debates using the perspective of an activist of smoking and nonsmoker to guide a holistic view. The approach can guide visualization of the health and quality of life issues. I can use the contradictory career of lobbyist to explain the danger of lifestyle behaviors as smoking and alcohol use. Afterwards, I can connect the risk to the subject of discussion on health and quality of life
