Analyzing The Hunger Games

The purpose of this paper is to find an aspect (theme) of The Hunger Games and analyze it using different scenes, dialog, etc of the movie to prove your point. We have gone over the possible theme and theme combinations of this movie, and they are endless, so it should be possible for members of this class to find an idea to concentrate on, formulate a thesis statement (point or argument) analyze it, and show your audience the evidence within the movie to support your point. You may use outside sources as supplemental evidence, but most of your proof should come within the movie itself. Since you cannot point to a particular page of a book in your paper, you will need to do a brief summary of the scene, dialog, or setting (et al) to set up your argument and present your evidence. However- this IS NOT a summary of the film, but rather your unique way of looking at the movie. You should take the position that your audience has not seen the film – so you should take nothing for granted nor assume anything – but explain in detail what you mean.[unique_solution]

  • Five (5) pages long
  • Last name and page number on top right-hand corner of all pages
  • Title
  • Paraphrases from the book as well as direct quotes need to be represented in an in text citation
  • Paper should have an MLA Works Citied page – done as we have in class (this is not part of the five pages)
  • Please review your ‘Sentence Variety sheet’ on Blackboard as many of you are missing your punctuation, and there will be no time to revise.
  • Use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
  • Pay particular attention to the use of active verbs (rather than ‘to be’ verbs)
  • Eliminate redundant expressions such as ‘there is’, ‘there are’ plus words like ‘that’, things, as well as generalizations such as everyone, all, never etc.
  • Be careful of pronoun referent, as you will be describing several different people and groups – meaning: be specific with this as well – do not overly use pronouns when terms that are more specific maybe used.
  • Be specific – NO GENERALIZATIONS – someone – who? People- what people? (Is there a better term for this person?)
  • Provide enough detail for your audience to understand and picture what you are saying
  • This entire paper should be written in third person – NO FIRST (I, me, mine, my) No SECOND PERSON (you).  This includes eliminating all ‘I think; ‘I feel’; ‘I believe’ etc. Your name is on the top of the essay – so I already know that this is what you think, feel, or believe.  (* also no exclamation marks.)
  • Proof read – proof read – proof read. Make sure to check the words you use spell check for – sometimes what you put down isn’t correct – (definitely – defiantly)
  • Make this academic – avoid slang (kids) words that are fillers (things)
  • Critical thinking is a must – be creative – original- but academic at the same time
