Selected locations

Gastown. Gastown is chosen for analysis in this project because it possesses several attributes that make it an area of interest for geographers. Among other reasons, I selected this city because of its sustainability initiatives; for example, the use of innovative means to conserve energy and minimize waste in making apparel. The city has a unique history and is known for its technology and innovations, as well as memorable experiences that attract tourists.  It is also known as an art and culture town and one of the most densely populate areas in the lower mainland.

Granville Island. This area was selected for analysis as a recent of its recently growing popularity as a shopping, business as well as recreational amenities. It is centrally located, which makes it a destination for several events, including the Vancouver Fringe Festivals. The area is also a major tourist attraction center in Vancouver, Canada. Among the many tourist attractions is the Granville Public Market. The town is also an art and cultural hub, with a rich industrial heritage. The experiences and unique economic aspects of this town make it an area of interest for this study.

Kitsilano beach. The area is one of the most popular destinations for sunbathers, surfers, swimmers, and many other funs of beech activities. Kitsilano Beach is a well-known tourist attraction center not just because of the memorable beach activities, but people visit to enjoy the weather, especially during summer. Since it is an active area with many economic activities, the city had adopted a bold green initiative for sustainability that makes it suitable for analysis in this paper.

Geographical Concepts

Place. As a geographic concept, place refers to the meaning that people attach to location. With place comes relative location and value. Place will help me describe where the locations are found as well as the value of the locations in relation to such qualities as beauty, aesthetics, among others.

Sustainability’. Sustainability will help me evaluate the three locations in terms of the ability of the environmental and the social systems to support life currently and in the future.

The analysis will use course materials, lecture notes, journal and peer-reviewed articles, as well as credible websites, links to synthesize information. The paper will contain an introduction, a description of the three locations, the geographical concepts are chosen, an in-depth evaluation of each location in light of each geographic concept, concrete conclusion, and recommendations.

This source presents a comprehensive description of Kitsilano’s physical, economic, and social aspects. More importantly, it describes Vancouver’s sustainability plans for the city of Kitsilano Beach. The relative location of the Beach is described by naming regions and features that are in the neighborhood. The source also states the value of the area by naming some aesthetic and cultural attributes of the Beach. The source outlines specific strategies adopted to ensure sustainability. It is a useful source since it describes the Beach in regards to its location and, at the same time, presents the sustainability plans adopted for the city. This source will be used to evaluate the location in regards to both the sustainability and place concepts.

This article studied ways of ensuring sustainable growth for specific cities, which included the Granville. It outlines strategies that the city has adopted and suggests how it could ensure economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The source outlines several strategies that are geared towards eliminating waste and conserving the environment. Policies outlined in this source demonstrate a balance between social welfare, environmental conservation, and economic development. The article emphasizes that plastic elimination of plastic bags is a key strategic move towards sustainability. This article is relevant for the project since it outlines sustainability plans in Granville Island. The article will be used to analyze Granville Island in terms of sustainability, which is one of the chosen geographical concepts.

This article describes one of the smartest moves of ensuring sustainable development in Gastown. The fashion industry in Gastown is adopting environmental protection initiatives by using eco-friendly materials to make apparel that ethically oriented. The article gives an example of fashion companies that have adopted these measures and the specific ways they achieve sustainability. This source will be used to evaluate Gastown in relation to the geographical concept of sustainability.  The article will also be used to give specific examples of how the apparel industry is supporting human life currently and in the future, while ensuring social and environmental well-being. It is a useful source since it gives a very specific and most current sustainability initiative in this location.
