APPLICATION: COMPETENCY SELF-ASSESSMENT
There are different competencies that define a competent psychologist. The knowledge about the use of these competencies is of great importance for a psychologist willing to gauge their competence. These competencies have some essential elements that help in the competence assessment (Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, Fouad, Hatcher, & Rodolfa, 2009). In the case of my assessment, the first type of competence to asses is knowledge in psychology. This competence may be gauged using the elements of scientific mindedness, scientific foundation of psychology and scientific foundation practice. In my case, I regard myself as a person who applies moderate scientific mindedness and foundation in my psychology practice. It is not at all times that I put into concern the scientific mindedness and foundations whenever I perform psychology practices. Therefore, I would get a moderate rating for my application of scientific concepts and its relations to psychology.
In the assessment of my skills in psychology, I would focus on the professionalism and relationships competence. Here, one of the essential elements in the professionalism category is integrity (Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, Fouad, Hatcher, & Rodolfa, 2009). In my entire practice of psychology, I have always portrayed a great deal of integrity. There has never been a time where I went against the policies set forth to guide the psychology practice. Here I would gauge myself as excellent. In the assessment of deportment, I regard myself as someone who behaves in a manner that pleases other people. I also believe that I have so far portrayed great etiquette in the way I carry myself. I would therefore regard my deportment as moderate. When it comes to the concern that I show to others, I regard myself as a person who is highly concerned about the welfare of others. The knowledge that psychology is more concerned about other people more than oneself makes me to concentrate more on the welfare of other people. Finally, I take with great regard my professional identity. The professional identity communicates a lot regarding my knowhow in psychology and I take it with great importance. The relationship competence is also a tool for the measurement of psychology skills. One of the essential elements that are of importance in this case is interpersonal relationships. Interpersonal relationship is an important aspect in psychology (Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, Fouad, Hatcher, & Rodolfa, 2009). Though I have not perfected my interpersonal skills I still believe that there is room for that. I would however say that my interpersonal skis are adequate to aid me in my psychology practice. Secondly my affective skills are excellent. Although I am a person who is not able to get along with everyone, I am excellent in the way I handle my emotions in different situations. Whenever I get along with a person, I do not allow their emotions to carry me along during the sessions. Finally, the expressive skills are vita in psychology and communicate one’s ability to perform (Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, Fouad, Hatcher, & Rodolfa, 2009). I am a person who is well informed when it comes to expressing to others what I feel. I believe in my good communication skills have played a great in enhancing my expressive abilities and would regard as excellent in that competence.
It is possible to perform the assessment of the attitude competence through gauging the management, administration and empowerment competencies. With excellent management, administration and empowerment competencies, one may be regarded as having good attitudes towards their psychology practice (Roysircar, G. (2004). Management entails working with people while coordinating and directing them. The same way management and administration of one’s feelings and moods have an effect on their practice in psychology (Walsh & Shapiro, 2006). I may not be excellent in leadership but am well endowed with good feelings management skills and am hence able to portray positive attitude towards different people.
Generally, I would say that so far, my psychology skills are above average. There are some areas that I have portrayed strength and fallen somehow weak on others. For instance, I view it of great importance to consider improving on my deportment. To enhance my deportment, I consider being more formal in everything that I do including the dressing code. By being formal, i believe that the confidence of those I work with will increase towards me (Fogaça, Rego, Melo, Armond, & Coelho, 2018). Research shows that people and more so patients are prefer to be attended by formally dressed expatriates (Reid, Makinde, Wilson, PausJenssen, Barton, & Wilson, 2014). To achieve this improvement, I intend to follow a specific developmental plan that involves trying out different forms of formal dressing codes. I will seek for opinion about my level of deportment as far as dressing is concerned. I believe that through the people, my deportment is set to improve.
The application of scientific knowledge and concepts when dealing with psychology issues is important (Walsh & Shapiro, 2006). I therefore need to enhance my skills on how I apply scientific skills in dealing with psychology problems. One of the ways of enhancing the way I apply scientific concepts in psychology is through ensuring that science acts as art and craft base for all the psychology decision that I make during practice. I intend to plan on identifying some of the important scientific concepts that will aid in my psychology career. After identifying these concepts, I will then research on how to apply then appropriately in psychology.
