argument research paper about a law that infringes on your rights or the rights of someone you know

In this assignment, you will write a 750 word, MLA format argument research paper about a law that infringes on your rights or the rights of someone you know. Your goal is to persuade your audience that the law should be repealed, or at the very least, issue a call for research to be conducted on the effect of the law on individuals or groups. Assume the members of your audience are an equal mix of adults who agree, are neutral, and/or oppose your claim. Your essay would appear in an online magazine such as PBS News, so you will need to appeal to the average reader (review the examples from class). You may, to some extent, have to inform your audience through definition and cause/effect in the narration section of your essay. You should pay attention to the skills and writing tips we have been talking about in class and from our readings in Reflections.[unique_solution]

The three components of this essay deal with the issue “or idea about which people disagree,” the claim “or a statement that tells readers the author’s position on the issue,” and the support “or the evidence that backs up the claim” (545). The introduction will often contain background information about the subject, any definitions associated with the topic, and the thesis statement (claim). Remember these elements of an argument introduction from pages 545-554 of Reflections: A successful argument has all or most of the following:

  1. It deals with a narrow, specific topic. Avoid broad subjects.
  2. It is a subject of controversy – “a problem or an idea about which people disagree” (548).
  3. It provides background information. The background information presents the context of the situation. You may have terms to define (chapter 16, page 451) as well as cause/effect relationships (chapter 17, page 497) to explain.
  4. It states a specific claim in a thesis (reflects your position on the issue).
  5. It depends on careful audience analysis.
  6. It presents reasons supported by convincing evidence (substantiated – logos/ethos). You will be completing research for this paper, so you will follow the MLA citation format. Review your notes from class as well as chapter 20, pages 623-634.
  7. It avoids errors in reasoning (chapter 18, pages 551-553 – fallacies).
  8. It appeals to readers’ needs and values (page 553 – pathos).
  9. It recognizes opposing views and refutes them (pages 553-554 – acknowledgement, accommodation, and refutation).

This is not all that you need to know, however. Do take everything we have or will talk about in class into account, as well as any specific comments and instructions made by Mrs. Wisener. Pay attention to the example essays in Reflections, and pay particular attention to both the structure and content of examples from class (both from Reflections as well as discussion) and the clear structural outline provided therein.
