Arguments Worksheet

Select one of the following articles and use the hyperlinks below to access it from Opposing Viewpoints in Context:

  • Health Care Issues
  • Compensation for College Athletes
  • Technology and Society
  • Social Media
  • Advertising

Write a 25- to 50-word response to each of the following prompts:

  1. What is the issue in the argument you selected?
The issue in the argument I selected is about the lack of proper compensation for college athletes. These college athletes are faced with multiple problems whereby they are paid less, or they receive no pay for their services to the college. This particular issue has prevailed for quite some time. Various organizations have held campaigns against the lack of compensation for college students (Ford, 2017).
  1. Provide an unbiased explanation of all viewpoints or premises of the issue.
The unbiased opinion is that despite paying and adequately compensating college athletes, the whole idea comes with shortcomings too. This particular issue is unnecessary, infeasible, and will eventually cause more harm than good to the majority of schools. Ultimately, the problem would ruin the current system associated with college athletes who give their best to ensure a particular school is heard and respected when it comes to athletics.
  1. Which viewpoint or premise is weak or irrelevant? Explain why.
Weakest viewpoint about compensation for college athletes is the fact that some athletes would look down upon others. This viewpoint is a problem since it gets biased on the point that some athletes would receive payments and others won’t receive enough pay for their services. However, it is essential to compensate college athletes regardless of the critical role they play when taking part in athletics.
  1. Is the argument inductive or deductive? Why?
It bears an inductive since it focuses on the general wellbeing of uncompensated college athletes. It is an argument that talks about the generality of compensating students who have had excellent performances when it comes to athletics. The case narrows down to a general conclusion based on paying college students effectively.
  1. What is the value of understanding multiple viewpoints before forming an opinion or argument?
This particular approach is taken to effectively enhance critical thinking concerning a specific situation in discussion and develop intellectual empathy. After generating intellectual understanding, a ground is set where the argument or opinion gets underpinned to allow various perspectives and alternatives are accounted for to obtain better results.
  1. Provide an APA-formatted reference for the article you reviewed. Use the Citation Tools link in the Tools section to the right of the material for assistance, and select “APA, 6th Edition” from the drop-down menu.
