Pool Parlor
Fig.1 Pool parlor Jacob Lawrence 1942
Pool parlor is a painting by Jacob Lawrence that got painted in the year 1942, depicting a pool table parlor where the individuals present are engaged in playing pool. I consider this work as “art” because it describes various aspects of society i.e., leisure, sports, socialization, among other activities, which is one of the roles of art. In the painting, it is possible to see the society depicted in a different perspective i.e., besides their daily economic activities, what other activities do these people engage in? Through this artistic depiction, we are in a position to understand the given society better as well as their way of life. With this in mind, the above painting qualifies to be categorized as an art given the role it plays in enlightening the viewer.
