art and practice of a major company that provides services and products, and to evaluate those services and products from the point of view of an Operating System

Project Overview:

This will be a group research project…the project is to examine the state of the art and practice of a major company that provides services and products, and to evaluate those services and products from the point of view of an Operating System…your group should be “balanced” consisting of both technical and business oriented people…you will work together to research a company, determine the company’s market niche, assess their strategic vision, and evaluate their portfolio as per the topics in this course that will be given to you…you will be required to write a detailed research paper per the guidelines below…you will also be required to make a PowerPoint presentation of your findings…

Project Detail

You need to get into groups of 4 for this project (there will be TWO groups of 3 – first-come-first-served!)…

Every group must select an industry and a segment within that industry…once that is selected, you must select a SPECIFIC company in the industry and segment…companies will be approved on a first-come-first-served basis…[unique_solution]

So for example…you can select the “financial industry” and the segment of “banking”…then you can select Chase banking as your company…

Companies will be restricted to ONE OF EACH TYPE…so for example, I will NOT allow more than one bank…

Now that you have selected the industry/segment and the company, you will create a profile of that company in terms of the products and services they provide both internally and externallyEXTERNAL products and services are considered to be those products and services that a company’s CUSTOMERS would see…INTERNAL product and services are considered to be what an organization needs to do in order to support the external products and services…so for example, web services would be considered an INTERNAL product and service…so visit the company’s website…do research online…you should end up with a fairly comprehensive list of products and services that your company provides…

Next, you will be given SPECIFIC TOPICS related to Operating Systems that you will need to evaluate…you will then need to take the internal and external products and services that you previously identified, and evaluate each one in terms of the issues, challenges and solutions that each topic brings…

For example…

Chapter 4 talks about THREADS…one of the specific topics in Chapter 4 is multithreading…based on each product or service, you will be asked what are the SPECIFIC needs and issues related to supporting multiple, concurrent paths of execution within a single process?…based on those needs and issues, what OS might support those needs and limit or resolve those issues?…

Let’s take a very specific example:

  • Let’s say you selected the FINANCIAL industry, the BANKING segment and the company CHASE…
  • Looking at each SPECIFIC product, service and internal process offered by CHASE, what is the need to utilize multithreading?…
  • Why do you think that?…
  • What facts and figures do you have to substantiate this position?…
  • Based on these defined needs, what OS might support that need?…
  • For example, MS-DOS supports single user single thread…NOT a good choice for a bank…some variants of UNIX support multiple processes but only one thread per process…some versions of UNIX DO support multiple processes and multiple threads per process, as does Windows and LINUX…what OS (name, version, etc.) do you think would best support this for Chase?…

It is possible that you would recommend different OS for each product and service based on the function of that specific product or service that you are discussing…

After you have completed this exercise for EACH product and service, you will need to recommend an OVERALL SPECIFIC OS that you feel is best for this industry and this segment and this company, and the reasons why?…

DO NOT…I REPEAT DO NOT…

DO NOT research what Operating System a specific company uses…that is NOT THE EXERCISE…a company’s overall assessment of what Operating System to select does NOT necessarily fit each product and service…if this is the path you take, you will NOT do well…

Some industries to choose from include:

  1. Banking
  2. Financial Services
  3. Customer Service
  4. Transportation
  5. Education
  6. Airline
  7. Manufacturing
  8. Health Care
  9. Hospitality
  10. Culinary
  11. Criminal Justice

SPECIFIC TOPICS TO COVER:

For each of the products and services that you have identified, you will need to discuss each in terms of the following items:

  • Threading (i.e., single threading, multithreading, etc.)
  • Concurrency (i.e. race conditions, structured applications, etc.)
  • Resource Competition (i.e., mutual exclusion, deadlock, starvation, etc.))
  • Fault Tolerance (i.e., spatial, temporal, etc.)
  • Caching
  • Memory Management techniques (i.e., partitioning, segmentation, paging, etc.)
  • Virtual Memory Management techniques (i.e., partitioning, segmentation, paging, etc.)
  • Scheduling (i.e., real-time scheduling, batch scheduling, thread scheduling, process scheduling, long-term, medium-term, short-term, etc.)

You must also provide a SPECIFIC EXAMPLE of each of the following:

  • Process flow with at least 3 interrupts (use Figure 1.5 as a guide)
  • Queuing model with at least 5 processes (use Figure 3.8 as a guide)
  • Memory Layout Map with at least 5 processes and 3 interrupts (use Figure 3.4 as a guide)
  • Process state transition model with at least 3 suspended states (use Figure 3.9 as a guide)
  • Process interaction chart (use Table 5.2 as a guide)
  • Semaphore Mechanism Diagram with at least 5 processes (use Figure 5.5 as a guide)

FINAL PRESENTATION

Items for the final presentation…

  • Everyone needs to be in business casual dress…the same dress that you would use if you were going on a job interview…
  • Please review the presentation rubric provided…these are some of the items that you will be graded on…
  • Each GROUP should submit ONE FINAL PROJECT
  • Each GROUP MEMBER should submit a copy of the FINAL PRESENTATION
  • Rather than have everyone sit through everyone’s presentation, I have decided that each group will present to me only
  • A schedule with Teams and presentation times will be provided the week of the presentation…
  • This means that you need to be outside the door waiting at least 5 minutes prior to your allotted time…if you are late and I have to wait for you, your group will lose a minimum of 10 points…

NOTE: The order of presentation (and Group number) was based solely on the order in which groups supplied me with their teams and companies…if you wish to change slots with another team, work it out with the other team…then I need you to send an email to me and ALL MEMBERS OF BOTH TEAMS no later than 9pm on FRIDAY EVENING…I will NOT accept any time changes after that…there will be NO SWITCHING OF SLOTS without an email by 9pm on Friday

One other item of note…

  • It is my expectation that each person give an EQUAL PART OF THE PRESENTATION…and by equal I mean BOTH TIME AND CONTENT…
  • For example…the following would NOT be acceptable:
  • Person 1: Company Overview
  • Person 2: Products and Services
  • Person 3: Diagrams
  • Person 4: Recommendation Overview
  • This arrangement would tell me that Person 1 and Person 2 did little real work on the project and that the vast majority of the work was completed by Persons 3 and 4…so please make sure you divide the presentation up appropriately…also, keep in mind that as everyone should have worked on all components of the project, I can ask ANYONE a question about ANY ITEM…
  • DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT give me definitions…we all should know what is meant by caching…do not waste time defining it!…
  • YOUR PROJECT will receive ONE GRADE…each person in the group will receive the same grade…
  • YOUR FINAL GRADE will be based on your individual presentation…

If you have any questions…please let me know…Mr. N.
