Article Review:Should Writers Use They Own English
This analysis focuses on the article “Should Writers Use They Own English?” authored by Vershawn Young, which expresses his concerns on the role played by standardization of English in promoting racial and cultural equal opportunity in the twenty-first century. According to Young, scholars and native English speakers should consider Black English and other mother tongue languages used by communities in the United States as a valid form of communication without the implied flaws and distortions (111). The author draws evidence from other articles that show most people in the United States do not use Standard English, which makes it essential for the Native English speakers and scholars to support the use of diverse languages in learning. Young intends to communicate to non-English speakers and curriculum developers and sensitize them to accept other dialects as valid forms of communication, which may encourage learning of multiple languages (111). The most exciting concept is the extensive use of Black English in writing this scholarly article, which seems to support the author’s main argument on the validity of native languages for disseminating knowledge to other scholars. From a personal point of view, I feel that Vershawn Young was successful in expressing his thoughts and beliefs on the suitability of all vernacular languages in communicating and sharing knowledge in higher learning institutions. The article “Should Writers Use They Own English?” by Vershawn challenges the notion that people have towards mother tongue language and their distortion of Standard English, which challenges modern scholars to promote racial and cultural equality in learning.
