We are living in the most technological advanced era, where we have smart phones that can do nearly everything a computer can do. Developments made in computer coding plays a key role in the world’s technological growth. Artificial intelligence is software that is self-correcting and can learn by itself. This is done by feeding the software large amounts of data, and intelligent algorithms that give the software a specific instruction manual for problem solving. In recent years, countless renowned scientists and entrepreneurs have warned of the urgent significance of AI, and how important it is that policy makers tackle the challenges raised by AI research [1]. Artificial Intelligence needs more government overwatch because in the wrong hands AI will be used as weapon. AI alone could cripple an economy via hacking into any government, bank, or even worse our power grid. On the other side of the spectrum, AI can be used to protect our digital life’s and bring another technological revolution where new discoveries in medicine, and potentially the key to immortality, In theory.
Imagine a world where we interact and see robots interacting with humans on a regular basis. This sounds amazing, but the average person does not understand the gravity of what this means and the possible serious potential threat this presents to humanity. I have been closely following progress made in AI for the last three years and now more than ever it seems to be here to stay. Recently, there has been growing alarm about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. Famous giants of the commercial and scientific world have expressed concern that AI will eventually make people superfluous [2]. Elon Musk, one of these technology giants, described AI to be very dangerous and shares concerns on our lack of government regulation or oversight on companies building AI. He has gone as far as to making speeches to U.S. governors stating, “AI is a fundamental existential risk for human civilization, and I don’t think people fully appreciate that.” We are literally building something that will be smarter than humanity and does not forget anything. Artificial Intelligence is a mind-blowing feature showing the true strength of humanities capabilities. In World War II the Manhattan project led to the creation of the atomic bomb and forever changed the world. This was a weapon created by the United States and although AI is not being talked about as a weapon, The United States Military is using AI and now developing robotic weapons that we may see in action in the future. With the military using AI in weaponry the topic of Ethics comes into the discussion. Ethically speaking is it okay to use robotics or unmanned devices to kill enemies? Our military has reported they will be using AI first to help deliver supplies using un-manned diesel sized vehicles to troops in high risk areas. This is a great use for AI that will bring relief right now to troops that are in harm’s way. U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is behind development for various AI applications for a wide range of purposes. AI research is underway in the fields of intelligence collection and analysis, logistics, cyberspace operations, command and control, and a variety of military autonomous vehicles. When I was a kid sitting in school listening to lectures about life and technology effects would almost always end in a question “Can you imagine what the future will be like?” Today in 2018, I believe the future is here and most of us do not even realize it. Artificial Intelligence will be the biggest creation since the internet or the computer. We really do not know how far some of these giant AI engineering companies are in creating “hyper Artificial Intelligence” but, like the Manhattan project when humanity has our eyes set on a goal, we achieve it. The United States government needs to take a serious look into Elon Musk’s concerns. At the very minimum, if there is even a 1% chance of AI turning on humans and decide we are a liability, it is a conversation all AI developers should be having together sharing their concerns with the government and vice versa. The future with AI is a mystery and seems like the plot of a Hollywood horror movie.
