Beauty play review
In the play “Beauty” by Jane Martin, there are two main characters, Carla and Bethany, who are opposing each other. In this essay, I will use this conflict and their discontent and jealousy to demonstrate Carla’s character and show who she is. Carla is a young and beautiful upcoming model “Bethany, dear one, and I have three modelling calls. I am meeting Ralph Lauren!”. She is beautiful but unsuccessful model without brain and personality. She wants to be smart and therefore works to become fashionable. Carla is aware of the cons and issues of being beautiful and attempt explaining it to Bethany to stop wishing for it. However, she is not satisfied with her life since she is envious of Bethany’s life. As her friend, Carla depicts feelings of jealous to Bethany and also her achievement.
Carla lacks wit besides being young and beautiful. She understands the problems of being beautiful. Hence, men accord her extreme much attention, to the extent that Carla’s life revolves around going on dates and spending much time talking on the phone “Somebody on the phone. (Goes back to it.)”. Carla not having intelligence is obvious to the eye since she can’t even recall simple things such as the page number on the book she is going through “Well, it’s not what I want. This is me, Carla. I have never read a whole book. Page six, I can’t remember page four”. She also shows a lack of intelligence when she goes to complete a job application. The section that states “sign here” she writes Sagittarius “You know the dumb blond joke about the application where it says, “Sign here,” she put Sagittarius?”. The conflict is not really with each other, but with Carla herself. She is wondering what she is missing, and she wants to be intelligent and smart.
