Benny Gantz rejects National unity arrangement with Netanyahu.

Blue and White leader, mandated to form government, says that he first wants “Israeli democracy to return to full operation”.

Benny Gantz refused to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of forming a government of national unity, as the leader of Likud had proposed to him.

“First of all, we will bring Israeli democracy back to functionality – and then we will form a government to address coronavirus and the additional challenges at stake.” The leader of Blue and White, whom the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, mandated to form government wrote on his Facebook page. “Citizens of Israel, what we have seen in the past week is unprecedented – Blue and White, headed by me, went out to fight for something that is obvious: The establishment of Knesset committees to serve the citizens – to allow compensation for those who are self-employed, to strengthen the National Insurance Institute, to examine the methods being used to monitor the citizens and to assist as much as possible in providing solutions to Israeli citizens on the coronavirus,” he added.

Netanyahu had written a message to Gantz that “this moment is a test of leadership and national responsibility”, so “the citizens of Israel need a unity government that works to save lives and livelihoods”.

The Prime Minister added that the differences between the two were few and could be overcome, but Gantz has a different opinion altogether, stressing that there are insurmountable differences between the two.

However, according to the Jerusalem Post , Gantz, in conversation with Blue and White militants, outside his home, admitted the possibility of accepting the proposal, but only if he is the prime minister in the first rotation.

Edelstein accepted Blue and White’s proposals for the creation of four commissions, including a special commission to deal with the coronavirus. He even voted for them, while all the other deputies from Likud and the parties that support him boycotted the vote, as Gantz’s party did not coordinate its creation with his party, as has traditionally been the case.

Netanyahu is looking for a political solution that will allow him to remain in power to avoid facing trial. The trial against him for corruption, fraud and abuse of office was scheduled to start last week, but was postponed until June because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The medical emergency also allowed Edelstein to suspend parliamentary work and allow the incumbent prime minister to rule by decree, without the control of deputies. Only the Supreme Court’s decision prevented the political stratagem from continuing to work for Netanyahu’s benefit.

The legislation will still take a few weeks to pass because it still has to pass through several commissions that have not yet been formed. It aims to prevent Netanyahu from continuing to challenge justice from the head of the Government position.
