Bilingual Case Study Proficiency and Report
There are various clinical and successive methods of analyzing the proficiency of students in the language. For individuals traveling to the US or the UK from other English or non-English speaking regions, the Test of English as a Foreign Language allows for understanding the proficiency of students in English languages (Bratton, 2018). However, there is no standard test for understanding the mastery of two or more languages. The Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM) allows for observation of languages spoken by students and their proficiency (Bondy & Wong, 2013). This test allows for better planning and understanding of handling individual student,
From the Solomon Matrix, I found that the majority of students born between the year 2005 and 2017 had challenges understanding and acquiring a second language. According to (Bharar & Lee, 2018), student mastery of more than one language is influenced by their background. As a result, after doing further analysis, I found out that most of the Caucasian descent did not know their native language due to parenting. In the sample of seventy students, seventy percent had a proficiency score of 3 out of 5. This score signifies a better understanding of the Spanish language
The most affected areas in language mastery are comprehension, which in our experiment had 2 out of 5 scores, grammar with a 2.5 out of 3, and vocabulary with a 2 out of five score. However, most of the students had a better score in pronunciations. Creating a bilingual identity is a challenge to students due to influences in their society, such as secularism and modernity. Thus, making bilingual comprehension an important aspect of learning with the intent of maintaining diversity in schools.
