Book review of gifted hands by Dr. Ben Carson

The book, ‘Think Big’ by Ben Carson is a very interesting book to read.it was written by Dr. Ben Carson in 1997, and millions of people around the globe have read it.  It is one of the most excellent books I have ever read. Right from the beginning, one can depict that it is not an ordinary book. The title is attractive and leaves the reader wanting to know more about how his/her hands are gifted. What is most impressive with the book is that it is not a fiction story. The book narrates how the author, Ben Carson, navigates through his journey to success. The book is a motivational and inspirational book.

The book narrates the life of Caron. He comes up from a family where her mother and father are divorced when he is still young. Together with his brother, they are brought up by his mother single-handed. Carson has seen it all. From ghetto and being humiliated by his classmates because of his performance, he ends up becoming a great neurosurgeon. Ben Carson is mortified through his primary school life because he was a poor performer in class. When he answered questions asked by the teacher and gave the wrong answers, his classmates would laugh at him. However, this did not lower his ego, he was so determined, and one day he rose to the top of his class.

Ben Carson’s book is a book that inspires many, right from the family relationship, school life, work, and life. The book helps many people who think that they have reached the abyss. No other person can give such a beautiful piece since Carson has seen it all. He is brought up in the ghetto, becomes last in his lower primary classes, again tops in his high school education, and later becomes the first neurosurgeon to separate twins who are joined in the head.

The purpose of the book is to inspire people to think outside the box and never lose hope of what they want to become in the future. Ben gives his life story of how he used to be the least performing student in his class. He never lost hope. He also narrates how he dares to perform surgery to remove a brain tumor, although he was not as experienced as other older neurosurgeons. His novel offers a reflection of how determined people should pursue life. He shares with the reader his formulas to success. His title of the book “Think Big” has other deep hidden meanings in it. He encourages people to use their God-given talents.

The creativity of man lies in his talents. The first T in the initials also stands for time. Time is an essential factor in life. Time management is great art that should be possessed by almost everybody who wants to make it in life. Hope is the other fact that Dr. Ben Carson talks about in his book.  He encourages people to have hope in whatever they do in life. Whether they have minimal chances of success, they should always have confidence. Getting insights from other people is also another essential thing that Carson talks about. If one wants to succeed in life, he/’she should be ready to learn from others. One should learn from the mistakes made by other people and never repeat them.  Being kind to people is another factor that determines one’s success or failure. Be nice to people where you are expected to be. Socialize, make a lot of friends, and be of help to them in times of need.

Additionally, people must be willing to gain knowledge. One must be passionate to know more and more each day. When people have got the experience, they become empowered. They can tour places all over the world they feel like. They also decide and choose whatever lifestyle they want to live in. To become empowered, Carson encourages people to become active readers rather than being a listener. Carson has traveled in many parts of the world courtesy of his knowledge. Ben Carson is an apt reader of books. This encourages his readers to emulate this behavior. Religious texts such as the bible and the Quran are essential as they give us understanding. He says that good books make us great, where bad books make us wrong. Carson advises people to practice In-depth learning skills. He discourages people from cramming things. He is very sorrowful that when we Cram, the knowledge vanishes very quickly. He advises people to have an in-depth understanding of concepts. Ben Carson has been thankful to God all through his novel. He credits all his achievements to the mighty hands of God. He encourages his readers not to forget God in the day to day activities and always remember him.

In my perspective, the novel achieves purpose as it can give readers a formula for success. It is written in the first person, and the author has tested whatever he has shared with his readers. He has experienced the bitter and sweetest angles of life. By giving his story and then sharing whatever helped him achieve his goals, Carson has been able to help many. From schools, workplaces, families, and churches, Carson’s teachings are applicable. The book is original, and it resembles other novels of Carson, such as gifted hands.
