Purpose: To inform my audience on how my ability to make people open their hearts and speak their minds just by listening to them express themselves has inspired me to pursue a career as a psychiatrist.

Theme: Today, I’m going to talk about my future career as a pediatric psychiatrist.

Introduction

  1. At what stage did you decide on your career? Most people decide on their future careers during their college years, but I like to believe that the profession called me at a tender age.
  2. An anecdote about my passion for helping people: Growing up, I always had the desire to understand and help people in need. As I got older, I realized I wanted a career that allowed me to think, feel, and relate to other people in a meaningful way. Various careers offer that kind of opportunity, but I was more drawn to Psychiatrists.
  3. Fortunately, I have a few friends of the family that are psychiatrists and have been inspirational with mentorship and career advice.

Body

  1. My strong desire to understand the biology, psychology, and social aspects of people has inspired my choice to pursue a career in psychiatry with a specialization in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
    1. As a psychiatrist, I would be required to go through four years of medical school, three years of approved residency training in medicine, neurology, and general psychiatry with adults, and two years of additional specialized training in psychiatric work with children, adolescents, and their families in an accredited residency in child and adolescent’s psychiatry. Besides, I would also need to successfully pass the certification examination in general psychiatry that is given by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

      1. A psychiatrist needs to keep up to date with new developments in the field through the reading of scientific literature and sometimes through attending conferences.
      2. The number of years may sound like a lot of years in school, but it is my calling and passion.
    2. Excellent listening and observation skills are a necessity for me to succeed as a psychiatrist.
      1. A psychiatrist must be able to listen and understand the patient with a sense of purpose.
      2. A psychiatrist must have the willingness to spend time educating patients about diagnosis and recommended treatments.

Transition: But learning and competency skills are only part of being a pediatric psychiatrist. A career as a psychiatrist is rewarding based on the statistics from the U.S. Department of labor.

    3. Some of the industries with the highest levels of employment in this occupation include the offices of physicians, psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals, and general medical and surgical hospitals.

Transition: besides being a rewarding career, its influence in changing people’s lives is what keeps me motivated and drives my passion. Changing people’s lives and helping them live better lives is what gives me a purpose. Helping children and adolescents as they strive for a better future is fulfilling for me.

  • My inspiration comes from having the power to influence and change a person’s life for the better.
    1. Children and adolescents are more vulnerable to mental disorders, and a psychiatrist helps in shaping their future.
      1. Being able to help children get better and shape their future is the most satisfying feeling that I can ever get.
  • Being a pediatric psychiatrist is the best career for me.
  1. According to the World Health Organization, 10 – 20% of the world’s children and adolescents experience a mental disorder.
    • As a psychiatrist, I have an opportunity to make the world a better place.
  1. A pediatric psychiatrist can help provide early diagnosis and proper services for children and their families, thus contributing to making a difference in the lives of children with mental disorders, among others.

Conclusion

  1. Being in a position to help others and improve lives has a fulfilling effect on someone. My passion for learning, understanding, and changing people’s lives puts me in a better position for my dream career as a pediatric psychiatrist.
