The Trolley Problem Several years ago, Philippa Foot, an English philosopher, drew acknowledgment of a particular problem. The issue regarded the driver of a trolley. Suppose as this driver, while you continue your work, you come into the view of five laborers busy repairing the track. The sides of the track are steep, and the track is somewhat of a valley. The only way, therefore, is to dodge the fatality is to stop. You step on the brakes, but to your shock, they don’t work. There exists a spur of the track to your right, which you could use to evade the disaster, but Mrs. Foot has a worker on that track who can’t get off it too. A quagmire subsequently faces you, do you go on to hit the five men, killing them instantly, or do you divert to the spur of track and kill the one worker? The dilemma here is known as the trolley problem, and I will focus my discussion on it. Most people would permit the sacrifice of the one worker for the ‘greater…
Impact of Online Shopping in Major cities Online shopping is a booming industry, and the public loves it. The convenience of online shopping takes away, battling traffic congestion and air pollution. It has also made it very possible for the disabled and older people to make purchases they are otherwise unable to make on physical stores. Like with any other growth, the internet economy has both a positive and negative effect. Thousands of jobs have been created for delivery people and truck drivers. Real estate companies are making a kill with the leasing of warehouses to shopping companies. Truck traffic congestion and roadway safety are some of the significant downsides, with cities like New York handling more than 1.5 million package deliveries. Ms. Kaufman of New York University observes that “we’ve entered an entirely new way of buying goods and services, but our infrastructure is only adapting incrementally.” The traffic strain is not one that will go away soon, and a lot is required to be done to keep pace with the ever-growing online economy.

The Effect of Terrorism on International Relations: The Case of Kenya’s Bilateral Relations with Somalia Chapter One: Introduction Before the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US by the Al-Qaeda terrorist group, the notion of terrorism was not as widespread as it is today. Consequently, it was only associated with the security events of a nation. Nevertheless, the onset of the attacks in the US changed the perception of terrorism from merely a security-related issue to one that affects all aspects of life, including international relations. Essentially, the incident created the concept of global terrorism, a factor that denotes the transnational nature of both the impact of terrorism and its associated politics. In this paper, an evaluation of how terrorism affects international relations will occur. The assessment will be based on the effect terrorism has on the bilateral relations between Kenya and Somalia — two neighboring states in Eastern Africa. In the discussion, the underlying thesis is that terrorism illustrates the concept of realism in international relations by creating opportunities for the more influential states to control the weaker ones. Transnational Criminals and Terrorists Organized crime takes many forms that include but not limited to human trafficking, drug trafficking, terrorism and trade in weapons. These crimes attract high-level organization concerning finances, operations and resources. It is in this regard that these crimes go beyond borders into the global arena. Terrorism, for example, is a worldwide menace with terror attacks taking place in various nations. Funding is a significant component of terrorism, and as such counterfeiting is one way of financing terror. Counterfeiting involves the sale of lookalike goods at a cheaper price (U.S. Government Printing Office, 2005). The sale of counterfeit and pirated goods has thus been instrumental in funding terrorism. The custom border patrol unit in the U.S. is tasked with ensuring that drugs, firearms and other contraband do not enter U.S. soil through U.S. border entry points. Transnational organized crime is a threat that is expanding at an alarming rate. Terrorist organizations, for example, penetrate countries with weak laws and poor economic stability easily. Parkinson’s disease Study M3A1: Draft Contingency Plan Hazard Identified Threat identification and risk assessment are essential in preparing for disasters at the community level (FEMA, 2018a). Heatwaves can be destructive, causing damage to property and injury to human beings. Extreme temperature is an identified hazard in New York. As such, mitigation and preparedness measures have to be instituted to reduce the impact. It is important to note that heatwaves are a natural phenomenon; hence prevention measures may not yield expected results. Preparedness, however, would significantly reduce the negative impact anticipated. A plan that is feasible, acceptable, accountable, compliant, and engaging should thus be laid out as it is more likely to succeed (Fema.gov, 2011). The three-step THIRA process is therefore essential in plan formulation (FEMA, 2018b) Mitigation Measures Mitigation involves measures aimed at reducing the severity of the heatwave. Such actions would include structural controls, for example. Though highly debatable (Bullock et al., 2017b, p157), structural controls can be used as a mitigation tool. Steel and concrete trap heat, thereby increasing heat impact. Having structural controls that allow for alternative…
