Pythokritos of Rhodes Pythokritos of Rhodes which some artists refer to as Nike of Samothrace, BCE 200-190, is one of the most popular sculptures in the world. It is a Hellenistic sculpture made of marble, based mostly on Nike, the goodness of victory according to Greek culture. Although the exact date of publication of the sculpture is not known, it has been on display in Louvre,Paris, since 1884.Horst Janson, one of the world’s renowned artists described it as the greatest “Hellenistic sculpture” (Tonnybee, 14). In all art perspectives, Pythokritos of Rhodes is a real masterpiece. What is outstanding about this sculpture is that it is an original sculpture. Most of the Hellenistic sculptures on display in many museums in the world are Roman copies, rather than the original sculptures. The sculpture is 244 centimeters and specifically made mostly of Parian marble. Although the exact date of publication of the sculpture is a controversial topic, it is still a great sculpture by all definitions. Aesthetic Greatness The concept of greatness is widely expounded as the capacity of specific individuals to explore opportunities and have better performance through manipulation of natural ability to perform better than others. In this case, the perspective of greatness seeks to build on the concept individuals or objects have a better chance to have higher performance in certain situations (Landow 1279). Greatness is thus, associated with certain natural instincts that exist in a person that propels them to have a competitive advantage over the others in the society. Therefore, greatness can be depicted as having the ability to conduct certain instances in society that are termed as being superior and surpasses the knowledge of others within society. In humanities, the aesthetic view of greatness is depicted to explore the abilities, especially in leadership and innovation skills. In each era, the changes were reflected, recorded, and evaluated by the premiere arts of the day. Sometimes their works sparked social change, other times it was a rejection of a change that was occurring. Regardless, it is for good reason that artists are often designated “the voice” of their generation. For this assignment, you will choose a movement, or an artist associated with a movement, that you feel had a significant impact on society/culture. You will focus your research on three things: the time and culture the movement existed in (context), the pillars of the movement (principles, beliefs, characteristics, and people), and the impact of the movement (how the movement represents a shift in societal progress, and/or the impact it had on future art and/or society). Rashtrapati Bhavan Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official residence of the President of India that is located in New Delhi. The building was designed by Edwin Landseer Lutyens, which is credible in its size, vastness, and magnificence. The decision to build the residence was made after the capital of India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi. The focus will be based on the ideology of the plans and building materials that were used in construction. A biography of the building designer will be incorporated to provide a further understanding of Lutyens. Edwin Landseer was born in 1869 in London, England, to an army captain. While growing up, Edwin appreciated local crafts traditions that would take complex interlocking shapes of cottages and barns (Geurst and Jeroen, 2010). He attended South Kensington School to study architecture that influenced him towards his creative career. At the age of 20, he took up architectural works that paid on commission for commercial buildings in town planning. Edwin dwelt on general stylistic designs. With his exceptional works, he developed a reputation by designing houses for English nouveau…
Formal art analysis Introduction The Monk of the sea is an oil-on-canvas painting by German artist Casper David Friedrich. The painting was done between 1809 and 1810, and it is one of Friedrich’s most famous paintings. The piece of art can be found in Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Germany. The painting depicts a Monk standing alone in the shore of a sea within a great expanse. The form, expression, and meaning of this painting speak a language that was understood then and can be understood today. In this paper, I carry out a formal analysis of the monk of the sea by Casper David Friedrich. The painting depicts a man probably a monk standing by the seaside. The painting shows a picture of a man standing alone and gazing into the sea. The painting has the dimensions of the sky, sea, and land. However, the artist gives the painting a larger space for the sky, which makes up at least three-quarters of the painting. The painting’s dimensions are also not uniform with the painter preferring 110 centimeters by 171.5 centimeters to…
The three eagles flying The three eagles flying is a self-portrait done by Laura Aguilar in 1990. Laura Aguilar stands with her breast open tied with a heavy rope between the American and the Mexican flag. The lower body is filled with stars, and her face masked with an image of an eagle found in the Mexican court of arms. The portrait is on display at the national museum of Mexican art. As a woman of color and also a lesbian, she drew that image as she belongs to the hidden subculture within a marginalized group. Her work is a depiction of the precarious double identity with her own body often being symbolic. The powerful and beautiful photograph explored the realities of the marginalized group, such as the women, Latinas, working-class, and those with learning disabilities. Laura says she wanted her friend to be the one in the picture, but she refused as she told her it was all about her. Therefore, the main aim of this paper will be analyzing the three eagles flying by Laura Aguilar. Laura Aguilar…
The Difference between Italian Bars and Other Kinds of Pubs Ales, beers on tap, cocktails and a decent wine if you’re lucky are some of the things you expect to find in your local tavern. Italians, on the other hand, do things a little differently. Their pubs are more like sandwich shops, coffee shops or restaurants that have liquor licenses. Such joints also sell a variety of things ranging from cigarettes to ice cream. They also feature highly talented baristas that serve the best coffee you could ever hope to tastes. Here are a few types of Italian pubs: Osteria Osterias are very similar to trattorias (family restaurants). However, the prices are lower, and they have a more relaxed and informal interior design and vibe. Osterias are more like wine shops that also have bars in them. Here you get to sample wines paired with cheese. You also get to sit at the bar and have some drinks with your friends. There are also neighbourhood osterias, which don’t primarily serve wine but local foods at affordable prices. Such Osterias are…
