Electronic Resources in a College Library 1.1 Introduction In this globalization era, electronic resources in the college library are no more alien. A library is an information centre that serves as a hub of teaching for most students. Electronic resources are responsible for providing information and knowledge, and these resources have a crucial role in the survival of such information. It is with no doubt that electronic resources form a vital part of college libraries. It is almost impossible for students to access the wealth of information that is available online from researchers around the world (Joo & Choi, 2015). The modern times have proven that libraries are not restricted to physical format resources; instead, they have provided to electronic resources. The growth of ICT has led to the shift of universities, from traditional print media to the use of electronic-driven services. The use of e-resources does not necessarily occur in print services; instead, it facilitates their access electronically. The current undergraduate students are a good representation of the new generation that can be called ‘digital natives.’ These people…
Free Speech on Campuses in Donald Trump’s America As American citizens, First Amendment rights are expected to be heavily protected. But recently, the right to free speech has come into question, specifically, free speech on college and university campuses. There is a fine line that many colleges/universities walk when it comes to free speech. For example, the conservative viewpoint may be that conservative students are being stifled on campus because their political morals are not as inclusive as those of a liberal. Situations like these are taken case-by-case to determine what is protected and what is not. The Congressional Research Service (2019) states that hate speech, ‘fighting words,’ threats, etc. are listed as unprotected forms of speech, but what, or who, decides when it crosses that line is not clear. President Donald Trump (2019) made it a point to give an executive order that enforces free speech on campuses, claiming: “Under the guise of ‘speech codes’ and ‘safe spaces’ and trigger warnings,’ these universities have tried to restrict free thought, impose total conformity, and shut down the voices of…
The differences Between Taiwan and Chinese Cultures “The culture of a nation resides in the hearts and the soul of its people”. The words of Mahatma Gandhi are a genuine reflection of the nature of Taiwan and China. Culture in contemporary society has proven to be on the verge of losing a distinction due to the constant immigration that is resulting in the exchange of cultural aspects. It is common, however, to note that countries that neighbor one another common share elements of culture. This is the perfect way to explain the reason as to why there has been confusion between the description of the culture of China and Taiwan. Some of the most common aspects of culture include the language that is spoken, the norms, the values that the community share as well as the artifacts that they share. Other than the way of describing the culture of a country, the culture in some communities is the reason for being. The Asian countries have been known to value culture, and they have been a distinct continent globally through the…
Emily Stark. “Examining the Role of Motivation and Learning Strategies in the Success of Online vs. Face-to-Face Students.” Online Learning, no. 3, 2019. EBSCOhost, doi:10.24059/olj.v23i3.1556. In this scholarly article, Emily analyzes the comparison between distance learning and face-to-face learning in terms of student motivations and learning strategies. Emily argues that a student’s motivation and self-discipline is directly related to success in online courses. The article focuses on the students’ characteristics and level of computer literacy or access to technology. Also, Emily analyzes the strategies used by students to learn in both distance and face-to-face learning. The article acknowledges the fact that distance learning offers greater flexibility as compared to classroom-based learning which has led scholars to focus their research on how self-discipline and motivation influence the success of students in distance learning. Emily collects research data through a survey using an online survey tool. Emily’s study indicates that there exist significant differences in motivations and use of learning strategies between students in face-to-face and distance learning. However, the research shows a connection between the influence of motivation and learning strategies…
