In sociology, what is the “second shift”? What are its implications, and will it change with time? The second shift is a concept that was coined by psychologist Arlie Russell Hochschild. It refers to unpaid work done in the home mainly by women after they have completed their 9-5 paid jobs. The second shift includes such responsibilities as cleaning and cooking for the household, bathing and helping their children with homework as well as other family care responsibilities (Gonzales, 2015). The second shift concept poses a significant burden on the women who are required to take up more tasks after the completion of their daily jobs. The study conducted by Hochschild revealed that since women still shoulder most of the home responsibilities, the lives of the couples were affected. There was more tension in the marriage, there were guilt and inadequacy, their sleep was changed, and it also led to the loss of sexual interest (Hochschild and Machung, 1990). There is, however, a possibility of the second shift changing with time. Hochschild, in their study, reported that there was a…
Discuss Whether Nature or Nurture Contribute to Special Needs In Children Introduction Development psychology refers to the scientific study of the various changes that take place in human beings in their entire life. It is a branch of knowledge that seeks to acquire a deeper understanding of the influence that both nature and nurture have on the development of human beings (Brewer,2020). Not only does this study explore the level to which development is caused by the gradual gathering of knowledge, but it also analyses the degree to which children are born with mental structures that are innate as opposed to acquiring knowledge through experience. The relationship between whether an attribute is part of one’s nature or is influenced by his environment of existence has been an issue of great significance in developmental psychology. Development psychologists have therefore opted to investigate this kind of relationship. From their investigations, nativists have always argued that attributes exhibited in children are due to the influence of their genes (Sameroff,2010). Natural human behavior is, therefore caused by present biological factors like the genetic code.…
epistemological component of philosophy Discussion The metaphysical, axiological, and epistemological components of philosophy all add value to the given philosophy in different measures. Of the three, I consider the epistemological part to carry more significance. Epistemology is simply the pool of knowledge surrounding a philosophical proposition. It gives credibility to philosophy by attempting to answer the question, “How do we know?” By this, epistemology encompasses the definition and construction of concepts, the quality of rational reasoning, and the validity of thoughts, emotions, memories, ideas, and all things senses or mental. In other words, it gives credibility to every sense of reasoning by first establishing how our minds are related to reality, and whether the relationship is valid or not. Being a necessity in determining the true from the false of every reasoning makes epistemology the prime component of philosophy. This is especially true considering that without the epistemological aspect, it would be impossible to distinguish between delusions and logics, or separate truth from error. For instance, epistemologists ask for the set of criteria that must be satisfied for something that…
Critique of an Advertisement The primary objective of an advertisement is to inform the target market about the availability of an excellent, service, or idea, to persuade people to take a favorable position about the issue being promoted or to remind people about something of value to them. The paper examines the print advert run by the Moms Demand Action, a gun-control organization concerned about the rise in mass shootings in the United States occasioned by the ease of access to guns by young people. The advert uses the images of two young children, where one holds a Kinder chocolate egg, while the other holds a rifle. The advertiser uses visual images and text adeptly to underscore the hypocrisy in U.S. society and to reiterate the need for gun control laws. The advertisement identifies the sponsor as the Moms Demand Action lobby group that seeks to educate the public about the dangers of guns in the wrong hands. The organization runs its campaign under the slogan, “For Gun Sense in America,” which implies it believes the current gun control and…
Educational Policy Change Introduction Modernization and rapid globalization are posing new and demanding challenges to people and to society as a whole. According to Rautalin et al. (2019), the increasing diversity and interconnection of people and the availability of large amounts of information are just a few of the factors that contribute to the demanding challenges. In the modern world, people compete for jobs both locally and internationally. Highly-paid employees in developed countries are competing directly with people with the same wages, skills, and qualifications in developing countries. In this context, governments must create education systems that are accessible to everyone and not just the favored few (Araujo et al., 2017). This is an effort that will promote global, and quality competition, all people, irrespective of their classes will have a fair chance to acquire the right kind of education and succeed. As highlighted by Niemann et al. (2017), countries vary substantially in the levels of student reading skills. This applies even in the wealthiest countries in the world. Within countries, the reading skills of students vary from one school…

Importance of ethic education Question 1 Ethic culture refers to the well-founded standards that assist in categorizing actions right or wrong (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2016). Ethics influences individuals behaviours and hence ability to make right decisions, (Knouse & Giacalone, 2017). Question 2 For a society to grow morally upright, ethical values such as honesty, discipline and integrity are crucial elements. My urge to become a professional educator is highly motivated through the learning of the significance of the ethical values in society. Question 3 An article published in the United States explains on disagreement in the parameters used in grading the student’s performance (Sackett, Kuncel, Arneson, Cooper & Waters, 2016). In my opinion, examinations should not be seen as the real determinant of the student’s knowledge. Another ethical violation act is indiscipline in a learning institution that leads to a negative impact on the student’s performance (Hanushek & W ößmann, 2015). In my opinion, zero tolerance and second chance should be used simultaneously in learning institutions. Question 4 An article in Thailand news update summarizes the assaults committed…
ill-famed Residential School System Executive Summary Reconciliation is an emerging concept that has taken center stage in the struggle to create a harmonious relationship as well as resolve historical conflicts between indigenous and non-indigenous people. While Canada as a country is known to the world for being polite, kind, and very friendly to all ethnic groups, the treatment of indigenous people seems to suggest otherwise. Many cases of unfair treatment against the indigenous people have been evidenced in our history, including the ill-famed Residential School System. The current approach of advancing reconciliation through establishing the Truth and Justice Commission is not resolving the conflict between the aboriginals and the non-aboriginals. We know this because incidences of violence against indigenous women, racism, and devastating land dispossession have continued to be witnessed despite the establishment of the Commission. Moreover, indigenous people have disproportionally been receiving social assistance compared to the white’s counterpart, an issue that further aggravates their relationship. The most effective way of addressing the overwhelming legacy of the infamous residential school system and other forms of discrimination committed against the…
The Conference of the Birds The Conference of the Birds is an ancient poem composed by Farid Attar. The poem is known to be the best piece of article written by the poet. The poem is made up of several parables where every parable is characterized by an allegory. This paper seeks to identify and analyze the allegorical players in the parables. One of the allegorical players in the poem is the birds. The poet made use of the birds to represent how humankind achieves enlightenment. The birds arrange for a meeting during which they are to find one of them to the sovereign leader (Campos, 2017). One of the wisest birds Hoopoe advice the birds to find Simorgh. Simorgh was a legendary bird. Every bird represented the moral symbolism of human behaviour. More so, every bird had its corresponding. The use of the birds is some kind of a parable where the moral experiences of the birds during their journey to find Simorgh represent the experiences of the humankind in their journey to find divinity. The parable starts with…
residential schools have brought a lot more negative effects to the children that attended them Residential schools were government-funded religious schools founded to assimilate Aboriginal children into Euro-Canadian culture. They were publicly funded but were run by various religious organizations. Residential schools were aimed at institutionalizing assimilation by robbing Native communities of their language, culture, and family relation. The schools, however, disturbed lives and cultures, creating long-term problems among Aboriginal peoples. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the fact that residential schools have brought a lot more negative effects to the children that attended them. First, residential schools were bad because they brought about isolation and assimilation of the children that schooled in them. Kids as young as four were ripped from their families and put in facilities that had been chronically underfunded, mismanaged, and inadequately staffed (Wilk, Maltby & Cooke, 2017). Such kids were also isolated from their siblings as they divided the schools according to gender. They too off their home clothes and all got dressed in uniforms. For boys, they were all forced to…
