Currently, according to the United Nations’ Strategic Development Goals knowledge platform (2019), levels of greenhouse gas emissions are more than 50 percent higher than in 1990. Climate-related disasters claimed 1.3 million lives and left 4.4 billion injured between 1998 and 2017. Climate-related disasters also result in financial losses amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars annually.
