Invasive Species Invasive species are controllable through a number of measures that can be used to kill or prevent their spread in the human environment. Some of the mechanisms include manual control. This may involve digging of the sites providing shelter, burning the places the species live like nests, or destruction, removal and picking of the nests by use of hands (Gallardo et al., 2016). Mechanical control is also possible by the use of appropriate machines to destroy the shelter or kill the species. Apart from the two methods, one could still apply chemicals to control the population by destroying their eggs, seeds or seedlings or even kill them. Despite the rapid reproduction and spread of invasive species, they are still manageable. They could be controlled through such measures as cleaning vehicles and equipment to avoid plants and seeds that are invasive. Another measure that can be taken is reducing soil disturbance during construction and maintenance activities (Lavin, 2016). Establishment of communities for health could also help in reducing and preventing spread of the species. Through these methods, we can…

Exemptionalists Science has come a long way since its conception in the Hellenic era. From then, man has tried, and I dare say, achieved feats in understanding earth and the universe at large (Cairns, 2014). This understanding has led to countless advancements in this field, and said advancements had helped humanity jump leaps in terms of perfecting ‘living.’ Improvement of science over the centuries has led to the development of medicine, technology, transport, food production, etc. which has all improved the standards of living (Cairns, 2014). All this has come at a great cost. Climate change, for example, is eating away at our planet. It is because of this that two revolutionary groups have emerged, each fighting the other but both fightings to save our world. These groups include the environmentalists and exemptionalists. The focus of this paper is on the later, a group that does not only acknowledge the superiority of mankind above all things nature, but the fact that we as humans, transcend all other lifeforms and as such have the ability to think, and to come up…

CHEMICAL EXPOSURE INTRODUCTION Legislation and compliance requirements are essential in chemical industries. They revolve around making sure that all the processes are up to standard .safety is one of the significant concerns looked on. The legislation and compliance requirements are several and vary with the type of company LEGISLATION AND COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS One of the requirements is disposal. It is the company’s responsibility to come up with an excellent safe strategy of disposing of its waste remnants. It should be in a position to treat the waste before disposing of it. Disposing of untreated waste will degrade the environment, which might cause complications to the life present in the area. Otherwise, the company should store the remnants in safe places, which will not lead to contamination before dealing with it. The company should also ensure that the company compound is well enclosed to avoid potential leaks to the outside space. By doing this, the environment outside is safe. (Handford et al., 2015) Handling and safety is also a critical issue in legislation and compliance requirement. Human health is so much…

UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING IN INDONESIA   Abstract: Publication of sustainability reports among corporation significantly increase, though it is relatively at the beginning stage in the university. Also, there is a literature gap in the relationship between sustainability performance and reporting. In response to these two factors, this study aims to analyze university sustainability reporting practices in Indonesia. It involves three steps, including knowing the reporting channel used by universities, analyzing the level of sustainability reporting readiness, and examine the difference between sustainability performance and reporting. This research used secondary data, and the samples included 48 Indonesia universities in the 2018 UI Green Metric World University Rank. It combines content to analyze data quantitatively. The findings show that Indonesian universities use several channels and forms to report sustainability, and most of them cooperate in this regard. The result of the Mann Whitney test shows that there was no significant difference between Sustainability Performance and Reporting, and between public and private universities in reporting. This indicates that, to a certain extent, the institutions already practiced sustainability, though they are not aware or…

Control of level of algae in the great lakes region   Background In the 1960s, there emerged an issue concerning water quality within the great lakes region. Particularly, Lake Erie was perceived as a dying lake since the rapid growth of algae in the area. The fast growth of algae is known as cultural eutrophication, and it is brought about by the excessive input of phosphorus in the water. By the late 1960s, both the countries which resided close to the great lakes area, namely Canada as well as the United States, came into a consensus regarding the limitation of phosphorous inputs in large water bodies such as Lake Erie. The key was to stop and control too much growth of algae within water bodies. The two nations also decided that the control of phosphorus deposits in the lake required a coordinated approach to tackle the issue. This call for action was the main focus stipulated by the “Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement” held at the beginning of 1972. Due to the combined efforts to limit the levels of phosphorus…

Industrial Machinery Vibrations: What are the Main Causes? Vibration is the oscillation/ back-and-forth movement of machines such as motors, driven devices, gears, and shafts among other industrial equipment. It is used to indicate sign or trouble in machines. When you analyze vibrations correctly, it becomes easy to assess the health of your machinery. The Main Causes of Industrial Machinery Vibrations Machinery vibrations can be caused by a single or a combination of factors. Here, it is also important to note that the vibration can also be as a result of auxiliary devices, not just the main equipment. Whether you have light-duty machinery or heavy-duty industrial system such as mining systems as demonstrated here, you need to understand the causes of vibrations and fix them. Here are the leading causes: Imbalance: If your machinery has a heavy spot in its rotating component, it is likely to have vibrations because of imbalanced weight. This imbalance is a major cause of trouble and can further result in defects or need for regular maintenance. Also, you need to appreciate that imbalance becomes severe with…

Essay on Global warming Introduction Global warming is the gradual heating of the earth’s surface, oceans, and atmosphere occasioned by the greenhouse gas effect as a result of increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants. This phenomenon is no longer a distant problem; it is happening now. There is no single day that passes without the effects of global warming being mentioned in global news across the world. Evidence of global warming is everywhere, ranging from melting of ice caps and mountain glaciers, warming up of lakes, changing migration patterns of animals, rising sea levels, and extreme weather patterns. Others include the extinction of some plant and animal species, the emergence of new crop pests and diseases, intense heat waves, among others. Despite the efforts made in response to this problem, not much has been achieved, and the situation is worrying. Global warming is attributed mainly to human activities that have interfered with the environment causing pollution. The impacts of global warming are irreversible, and the only thing that can be done is to mitigate the effects and…
