DRUG TREATMENT FOR A PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER Introduction Schizophrenia disorder is a brain syndrome that interferes with the manner in which people feel, perceive and think under normal conditions. The hallmark symptoms of Schizophrenia disorder is psychosis. A symptom which entails experiencing hallucinations (voices) and fixed beliefs which are false in nature (delusions), Schizophrenia symptoms have been categorized into four domains. The first domain being the positive symptoms; which are basically psychotic and characterized by experiences of auditory hallucinations, false beliefs (delusions) and disorganized behavior. The second domain is characterized by negative symptoms causing a decline in emotional ranges, speech poverty and general loss of interest in almost everything the victim does. The victim has a tremendous inertia. Cognitive symptoms mark the third domain of the disorder. Generally, the symptoms cause deficits in the working memory of the victim as well as the concentration ability. The victims usually find it hard to comprehend subtleties and nuances of relationships and the interpersonal cues. The last domain is the mood symptoms which is characterized by the manner in which victims of this disorder…
Environmental Health (Fluoride in the water in Pensacola) Introduction Pensacola has its location in the State of Florida, the United States. It serves as the Florida Panhandle’s westernmost city in Escambia County. The population figures reach approximately 51,923 (Lepo & Snyder, 2000). Pensacola acts as a seaport with a huge bay. It receives protection from Santa Rosa Island and has connections with the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its proximity to the coastal area and the presence of several industries, Pensacola possesses the worst drinking water in the United States as per reports from a national survey undertaken in 2017 (Perrella & Kiss, 2015). Many studies show that the water comprises approximately 21 chemicals that have overpassed health guidelines (Lepo & Snyder, 2000). Among the chemicals, carbon tetrachloride, lead, and radium affect the water system in the region. The Environmental Water Group (EWG) carried out 20 million tap water quality experiments and tests between 2004 and 2009 to identify the level of pollution in the water (Foote, 2011). The organization identified over 316 contaminants in the tap water received by…
how marijuana negatively affects the mental and physical health of an individual Marijuana is one of the most popular drugs in the world, with the youths consisting of the most active users. There has been numerous debate about the legalization of weed with most people arguing based on the curative effects of the drugs. There has been a shift to the traditional laws prohibiting leisure user of marijuana in the United States with several states legalizing the drug for recreational use. However, there still valid reasons why the drug has been prohibited in many countries. In this paper, we are going to analyze how marijuana negatively affects the mental and physical health of an individual. Mental health cases are on the rise, and this has been attributed to the abuse of illegal drugs such as marijuana. Notably, the youth have suffered the most casualties in the horrific adverse effects of this illicit drug. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (2019), “adolescents who used marijuana regularly were significantly less likely than their non-using peers to finish high school or…
Chronic obstructive lung diseases Chronic obstructive lung diseases refer to a group of lung diseases that obstruct the flow of air from the lungs. It causes a person to cough, breathe with a lot of difficulties, to gasp, and excessive production of mucus. The leading causes are exposure to irritating gases such as cigarettes. In most cases, people suffering from COPD are at higher risk of getting heart disease and lung cancer. Therefore, it is not a small disease because it can cause death within a short time. The leading cause of the disease in advanced nations is tobacco smoking. In some regions of the world, the main reasons are exposure to fumes from cooking fuel in poorly ventilated houses. The main risk factors for COPD are outdoor and indoor air pollution, tobacco smoking, and industrial dust. Others include chemicals in the form of vapor, fumes, and irritants. One of the leading indoor pollutants is biomass that most communities in use in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia use it for cooking fuel in poorly ventilated rooms. The leading cause…
Bipolar Disorder (BD) At least one percent of the world population suffers from Bipolar Disorder (BD). According to Grande et al. (1), affective disorders have different severity from unipolar, Bipolar I up to Bipolar II. However, women are more prone to Bipolar II. In their study, Grande et al. (1) aimed at examining aspects of BD such as its causes and prognosis, discuss cases of interest such as BD during pregnancy and survey trends in the treatment of BD. BD is also called manic depressive illness. It is an extreme mood disorder that manifests as mania, hypomania, and depression. Mania and hypomania are characterized by increased movement and elevated moods. In both, occupational and social functioning may or may be weakened to the extent of hospitalization or may not be weakened completely. For hypomania, episodes continue for four days. Diagnosis of BD using phenomenology-based methods is controversial and has several limitations. It involves interviews with patients and their relatives. BD starts with episodes of depression. Bipolar depression begins early and may develop together with psychosis. Patients with BD are very…
Picot Question (therapy) Population: Adult patients who have undergone a total knee arthroplasty Intervention: The use of Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) in conjunction with physical activity when completing physical therapy Comparison: The use of CPM in conjunction with physical activity compared to the use of physical activity alone when performing physical therapy in the acute post-op setting. Outcome: The use of CPM with physical activity does not decrease pain, joint stiffness, or recovery time, as well as increase physical activity compared to physical activity alone in the use of physical therapy in the acute post-op setting Time: Post-op day 0 – until discharge form acute postoperative orthopedic unit/or completion of CPM therapy PICOT Question: In adult postoperative total knee arthroplasty patients, how effective is continuous passive motion therapy in conjunction with physical activity in relation to pain, joint stiffness, physical mobility, and recovery time compared with physical activity alone starting at post-op day zero until discharge form acute postoperative orthopedic unit/or completion of CPM therapy?
The Power of Habit review The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg extensively elaborates on what causes the development of habits in humans. Duhigg, in the book, further explains the processes that are involved in converting a simple action into a frequent thing that becomes difficult to quit (Duhigg). Specifically, the book focuses on the development of gambling addiction, a process that he explains most people indulge in it involuntarily. According to Duhigg, gambling habit is adopted without the knowhow of the individual and eventually becomes a neurological issue that is difficult to overcome. However, further evidence from the book indicates that the addict, Angie Bachmann, is conscious concerning the addiction and understands the repercussions of engaging in the process. Angie Bachmann is fully responsible for her ultimate fall into debts as a result of indulgence in gambling. While various external factors play a significant role in putting Angie Bachmann into addiction, they are insufficient to exempt her from the indulgence. Analyzing the multiple reasons that support the argument that Angie Bachmann is guilty of her indulgences will open up…
RNA with HIV and COVID-19 DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, and it is a molecule that is composed of two chains coiled around each other. RNA, on the other side, stands for ribonucleic acid it is a single chain. Despite the two molecules being nucleic acids, they differ in several ways, especially in terms of structure and composition. In terms of function, DNA is responsible for replication and storage of genetic information while RNA converts the genetic information in DNA to a more usable way. Structure wise, DNA is composed of two double helix strands while RNA is single-stranded. DNA is made of deoxyribose sugar while RNA is made up of ribose sugar, and this also differentiated the two nucleic molecules. Lastly, the two are different in terms f bases making each one of them. Both DNA and RNA have a total of four bases, three of which are similar in both cases and another one which is different in each case. This one base is what brings the differences between the two nucleic acids. The three standard bases in…
Acute uncomplicated pancreatitis Introduction: According to the guidelines, the repetitive utilization of imaging happens to be unjustified in patients who have been diagnosed with acute uncomplicated pancreatitis (AUP). The diagnosed UAP presents with increased serum amylase or lipase activity and abdominal pain with the absence of severe disease signs. The objective of this particular study is to examine the associated cost and overutilization of computed tomography imaging in patients who have acute uncomplicated pancreatitis that runs into two out of the three diagnostic criteria. Methods In this particular retrospective single-center study approved by the Institutional Review Board, we got to identify every adult patient diagnosed with acute pancreatic (AP) from the year January 2012 to October 2017. At first, patients were identified through ICD-9 code for acute pancreatitis (577.0) as well as ICD-10 codes for various etiological AP (K85.9 unspecified, K85.2 alcohol-induced, K85.0 idiopathic, K85.3 drug-induced, K85.1 biliary, and K85.8 other). There was a confirmation of diagnosis by chart review by the use of recognized non-imaging diagnostic criteria (existence of usual abdominal pains and increased amylase or lipase better than…
