Is drug and alcohol addiction a choice or disease To many people, more so those with an understanding of how the human body operates, it is clear that the body is meant to function in a given manner. The approved way of body functioning is usually changed when one is addicted to alcohol or any other drug; hence it does not function normally. This is one of the reasons any addiction is generally referred to as a disorder or a disease. Therefore, it is not based on the individual’s choice to be an addict but the overall orientation of the body that is changed when one uses alcohol or a drug for a long time to the point of being an addict (Heather, 117). The first reason why addiction is not a choice but rather a disease of the disorder is that addiction changes how the brain works, or responds to situations involving rewards, self-control or even stress. The second key reason is that the effects of addiction are long term in that they can persist even when a person…

Most of us learn responses to conflict from observing others, especially members of our families of origin. Reflect on your family and the ways of responding to conflict used by your parents and siblings. Describe those patterns. To what extent do your habitual ways of dealing with conflict reflect patterns you observed while growing up? Families have different ways of solving issues. Some are passive, while others are active in conflict resolutions. My family generally consisted of overt conflicts while growing up. My parents would solve their conflicts in open through verbal exchange, facial, and body language that showed their disapproval with each other’s ideas. The overt behavior was also used in disciplining my siblings and I whenever we did something wrong. My two elder siblings would also verbally confront each other whenever the disagreed. On rare occasions, they would fight, and my parents would intervene by punishing both of them. Being punished further would be a lose-lose situation for both of them because the winner and the loser of the fight would still bear the punishment, which in most…
Fire-Fighting Accidents caused by fire are always tragic when they occur. Under normal circumstances, fire involves the release of energy from the combustion of materials. The fundamental component of fire is oxygen, but other materials tend to combine with oxygen to burn at different temperatures. Fire in its normal state is an essential component in the maintenance of the ecological balance. However, the adverse effects of fire are seen when accidents are caused by fire. Fire accidents are mostly accelerated by catalysts that cause excessive combustion above levels which can be controlled by the existing control measures. The oil and acetylene industries, for example, are always at a higher risk of being hit by fire tragedies. Oil is highly flammable, and thus exposure to fire may lead to a fast spread of the fire. The accidents in fire stations are always in the form of explosions as oil tanks succumb to the heat caused by fire and the flammable nature of oil. Acetylene, on the other hand, is a hydrocarbon that is used as fuel and thus is also flammable.…
Evidence based research paper on prevention of Obesity Introduction Obesity is projected to the third greatest booster to the overall burden of all ailments globally and especially in the United States and Australia respectively. This is mostly evaluated and analyzed using the body mass index approximating 30 grams per meter square or higher. The disadvantages of obesity have been outlined in this paper. The scope of this paper discusses beyond the use of body mass index to evaluate obesity to the real measurements of body fat amounts. Although, techniques like underwater weighing, dual energy x-ray absorption, and biometrical impedance evaluation only measure the total mass of fat in the body are very expensive. These methods are also very time consuming to apply in a large set of population In regards to this, the anthropometric technique which recognizes high-risk adiposity correctly is still under debate. Several other alternatives have been used to rectify the assessment of high-risk adiposity hence provide effective measurements. Some of these techniques include the, higher waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and the waist height ratio. High waist circumference…
Negative effects of war on drugs in America War on drugs is an initiative led by the government and was started in the 1970’s by the government of the United States to fight to stop unauthorized drug use, their distribution, and the whole drug trade through increasing and enacting penalties for the drug policies offenders. It’s the longest war existing in America, and since Nixon started the modern war on the drug it has been over 40 years, and yet drugs stopped to flow in American society. The war comes with harmful consequences that destroy many issues that people care about, and they hold so much value on. The American war on drugs has led to the rise of racial injustices issues Lim, Y. (2018). Although the rates of drug use and drug sales are equal in all races, the African – American is arrested 13 times more than the white people and even 57 times in other states. Again, despite the Latinos and the African- American making 27% of the American population, on the drug arrest rate…
Psychedelic Treatment for Addiction The use of psychoactive psychedelic drugs to treat addiction may appear paradoxical, but it is not an entirely new phenomenon. The psychedelic psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD or acid) have been used to treat alcoholism as early as the 1950s. However, unproven efficacy and public perception of these hallucinogenic drugs have limited research into and the use of psychedelic substances in the treatment of drug addiction. The opinion of the use of experimental drugs to treat addiction is changing due to powerful personal testimonials and scientific research into the field. Certain psychedelic drugs, specifically Ibogaine and Ayahuasca, have been shown to treat addiction. This paper will compare the success rate of the usual standard of care treatment options for addiction to the newer psychedelic treatment options of Ayahuasca and Ibogaine. Background Substance addiction is a chronic mental disorder that leads to a compulsive utilization of a rewarding substance that has harmful side effects. Scientists believe that addiction results from coping mechanisms for early childhood pain, trauma, or emotional rejection (). Genetics also plays…
