experience of Clarence Lee on the railroads Life in the South and chiefly Louisiana was facing a hard economic time for everyone, but the sharecroppers faced more challenges in meeting the basic needs. Clarence Lee is the author who was a son of a sharecropper in debt, and he had to be sent away to fend for himself. The author is an African American who had nothing in a society that was discriminative in terms of racism. Thus he never occupied any respectful position but only a beggar who was out to survive. The author documented his experiences in Louisiana railroads using a memoir of how he had to struggle and the challenges he faced while out of the care of his parents who were sold and bought from one farm to another. The source is a memoir because it provides the experience of Clarence Lee on the railroads and how he used to suffer and get depressed because of the constant racism he faced daily. The publication of this memoir in 1999 meant that most scholars, students, and historians…
casual conversation Last year while at the park, I heard a guy talking in a language that I thought was quite intriguing with an exotic accent. After the guy got off the phone, I casually inquired what language he was speaking, and he told me Xhosa. We got into a casual conversation and learned that we were studying in the same college and were interested in a lot of similar activities in school. As a result, we became acquittances; thus, we said hi when meeting on campus and occasionally met for drinks. I found Sam, the chosen reference name in the assignment, to be the best candidate for the study as he is from a different part of the world thus has experienced different factors that have developed his personality. Moreover, from the interactions we have had, he seemed open and jovial therefore, I figured he would share more information about himself. Interviewing Sam was a pleasant experience as he was talkative and shared a lot about his background and aspects that have been crucial in building his identity. Moreover,…
Condoms prevent teenager’s pregnancy Introduction Making condoms accessible promotes safe sex, but do not promote the real act of having sex. Similarly, implementing the free distribution of condoms will help teach responsibility, promote safe sex, help to lower teenagers’ pregnancy, and, therefore, condoms should be available for teens. Currently, the rate at which young people are getting sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies is increasing. If distribution of condoms to teens is implemented, there would be low rates on teenage pregnancies. However, it will help to decrease the number of teenagers dealing with these kinds of issues at a young age. Something more should be done for purposes of preventing teenagers from finding out the hardest way the harsh consequences that unsafe sex would bring about. Specifically, the availability of condoms will encourage teenagers to make safe decisions. Again, condoms have played an essential role in preventing HIV infections around the globe. Likewise, when condoms are made available, there are still quite several factors on cultural, practical, and social that can prevent individuals from making use of them. For instance,…
impacts of cyberbullying on teenagers The internet has provided a favorable environment on which bullying can conveniently occur. The anonymous environment that is offered by the internet has resulted in an increased number of cyber assaults. As such, cyberbullying is a modern phenomenon that poses severe challenges in society. Cyberbullying stands out as a unique form of harassment that differs substantially from offline bullying. Teenage bullies often bully others to affirm their power while others do it for revenge. The issue is of great concern considering the high number of teenagers online. It is apparent that adolescent aggression has increased because of the growth of technology and easy access to information primarily through social media. Disturbingly, reliable evaluations have indicated that instances of cyberbullying are rising at an alarming rate. This is worrying because research has suggested that cyberbullying causes severe short-term and long-term effects on the victims. Similar to other harassment behavior, cyberbullying is an activity that is mainly promoted by three main aspects that include relationships, control, and power. Through this paper, I intend to discuss the impacts…
Crime and Deviance Introduction A theory provides a clear elaboration on the prevailing relationships between various phenomena. Accordingly, the theoretical view towards crime will help explain the influence of certain factors towards criminal and deviant acts. For instance, some theories assert that criminality is an innate characteristic of a human organism, that the fear for the consequences of breaking the law tempers. Moreover, other theories argue that attribute the emergence of criminal behavior among individuals should be to biological, sociological, psychological, and economic factors or an amalgamation of elements arising from the above-mentioned influences. In this paper, we will examine the theoretical perspectives that can explain the development of drug addiction, which is a form of deviance. Case The form of deviance that we will discuss in this paper is the problem of substance and drug abuse among adolescents and juveniles. Drug addiction in contemporary society is a major issue that plagues the psychological and physiological health of the youth around the world, in addition to influencing chronic addicts to engage in criminal activity to feed their habit (Krohn et…
Discussion on adolescence The transition from childhood to adulthood reflects adolescence (Tanner & Arnett, 2016). It is a time of physical, social, and emotional changes. Young people have a rather self-centered idealism. We say we are absolutely grown men, so they take no guidance from adults. Young people prefer to expect the best result in all circumstances. On the contrary, it is not always possible to obtain better outcomes. Moreover, teenagers are really critical. You still want someone or someone to be criticized, but you don’t want to be criticized. They are often irritated and upset if criticism, particularly by adults, is addressed to them (Tanner, & Arnett, 2016). Personal fables illustrate how young people feel that what happens to them is special, even though nobody else is in a position to experience the same (Tanner, & Arnett, 2016). This assumption explains why the acts of young people may have profound consequences for their lives. Another teenage distortion is the imagination of the viewer. Teenagers prefer to assume that people concentrate and are in the process. This trend is an…
walk in support of those suffering from mental illnesses A television commercial by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 2019, announces a walk in support of those suffering from mental illnesses. The walk is a guarantee to individuals suffering from mental illnesses that they are never alone. Living mentally healthy is essential, but it is also a challenge as statistics show that over forty million people in America will experience a mental condition (Ispot.tv, 2019). Mental illness can manifest in the form of depression, multi personal disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety. “The Health Benefit Model (HBM) was developed initially in the 1950s by social psychologists in the U.S. Public Health Service to explain the widespread failure of people to participate in programs to prevent and detect disease” (Champion& Skinner, 2020, 46). Later it evolved to study individual responses to symptoms and their compliance with medical treatments. The authors Champion and Skinner in their book state that, “the HBM contains several primary concepts that predict why people will take action to prevent, to screen for, or to control illness conditions; these…
Life in Canada Before I came to university, I could have agreed with the National bank’s article: ‘Quality of life in Canada.’ Because Canada is a developed country, and I usually assumed the government is adequately working to boost the social and political capabilities of the nation. But by the content in article two, my assumptions might have been wrong. Anyway, it all depends on a person’s social background. Before I joined university; my neighbourhood had adequate resources in term of quality and quantity. And I assumed social determinants were equal to every Canadian, turns out I was wrong. Social determinants are the necessary conditions that determine the overall performance of the society at large (Raphael, 2017, p.41). In other words, determinants will control the possibility of staying healthy or becoming sick. Also, social determinants are the level of an individual’s physical and social capabilities to achieve the desired goal. After I came across the second article, it was clear that social determinants vary amongst Canada citizens. According to research, citizens consistently provide adequate information to the government concerning…
Trying Juveniles as Adults I think trying a juvenile accused of murder as an adult does not make sense. Besides, death is a serious crime that has to be punished, and there is also the consideration that the defendant is a child. A 14-year old is not allowed to vote or give consent to sexual activities; he or she still needs guidance in making decisions. Sentences given to juveniles should be meant to develop them and change their behaviours for the better and not ruining the rest of their lives. Trying a youth as an adult means he gets the sentence of an adult and has to be incarcerated together with adults. The adults in prisons could hurt these children, and if they survive, it won’t be effortless to rehabilitate them. Charging a 14-year-old with murder as an adult could give him or her a life sentence in prison or even death sentence. This sentence snatches the life of these teenagers even before they begin making sure that they never attend college or Prom, they do not get to experience…
marijuana cannot be legalized The thought that marijuana sales and use among teenagers could be combated through making it legal is ill-advised and an illusion. It is like making the liquor store open for an alcoholic and expecting them to not drink or instead stop drinking habits along the way. The move to legalize marijuana will serve as a tool for bringing the drug closer to teenagers. In fact, the users will have an increased rate of episodes of smoking marijuana when they now do it freely. Now that some people believe that giving the smokers freedom to continue to do so will reduce the interest of the sellers, instead, more sellers of the drug will come on board now that is legal. It is due to the fact that the rate of unemployment is continuously becoming a sore to the development of our people. The unemployed youth, those that had initially had fears over the same will now come out in large numbers to venture into the business, given that it will be the number one trending in the…
