Atheism vs. Theism Introduction Atheism questions proof about the reality of God’s existence; hence, it disregards everything religious. Simply, atheists do not hold onto God as their guide and protector like Christians. Whereas this may appear as a standard viewpoint of people with the right to freedom, believe it or not, multiple nations across the world criminalize atheism. On the contrary, theism refers to the belief of divine reality existence, usually pertaining to monotheism (one God). It occurs in various forms, including monotheism (belief in one God) and polytheism (belief in multiple gods). They belong to certain religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and Hinduism. Atheism: Benefits and Detriments Society may have various contradictory ideologies about atheists, but these people have not-conflicting ideas. First, atheists do not have to argue almost every time a person offend any religion because they are not associated with any religion. It is hard for them engaged in heated debates regarding which religion is superior to others. Atheists are free of disputed views. They never fight with others to make their own ideas more…
Analyzing Bill Maher’s “Religulous” The topic of religion has been a subject of debate for a long time. Atheists and other non-believers argue that it is overrated, and aims at enslaving people with its beliefs. Karl Marx is famed for his sentiments on religion, which he posits, is the opium of the people. Marx perceived religion as a human-made theory, which attempted to enslave man through its principles. In the film “Religulous,” comedian Bill Maher equally criticizes religion as the worst form of slavery to humanity. He posits that the world could be a better place if there were no religion and its principles to govern people’s beliefs. His argument is structured upon various significant religions of the world, which he criticizes throughout the movie. In the film, he is seen touring the world, where he conducts interviews with Christians, Catholics in Vatican, Mormons, Buddhists, Islam, among other religions. He attacks Islam with the Jihad concept, while he finds no fault in Buddhism and Hinduism. He perceives Christianity in light of Thomas Jefferson that it is the most perverted system…
Good Country People story review The story Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor is a typical representation of Christianity and the South American people. O’Connor’s story touches on the role of intellectualism and physical challenges in shaping individual identity. The story is centered in Mrs. Hopewell’s daughter, Joy/Hugla, who is emotionally scattered due to hunting escapade that went wrong, rendering her crippled. The physical impairment caused her to retreat from the physical world and into the world of intellect. She was given her original name as joy by her mother, Mrs. Hopewell, an optimistic woman who confronts adversity by her simple philosophy of hoping for the best. The optimistic nature of her mother irritates Joy, who retaliates by changing her name, legally, to the ugliest name she will think of, Hugla. The story does not give an account of how various people react to physically impaired people. However, O’Connor took a different sway on Joy’s identity. The choice of her name, Hugla, mirrored the deliberate ugliness in her personality. Joy is intentionally rude to her mother because of her philosophy…
Social Control Agencies When people are born, they know nothing about the world, its rules, and culture. They have to be socialized by their parents, teachers, and the broader community. As people grow up, they are introduced to the expected and appropriate behavior that every society member has to uphold. Since we all live in a community, some universal rules and norms are to be followed by everyone. Anyone who deviates from these established norms receives a minimum level of punishment in an attempt to maintain social order. There are formal and informal agencies of social control that regulate group or individual behavior in society. Formal Social Control Agencies One way of regulating human behavior is by use of authorized agents, including the police, military officers, and employers. These agencies are always the last resort, as the community should provide social order without using force or violence (Deflem, 2015). However, social control institutions are used in cases whereby informal social control mechanisms are ineffective. In such cases, force has to be applied to ensure that individuals or groups of people…
