essence and relevance of friendship In book 8 of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle attempts to explore the essence and relevance of friendship. He begins by describing the importance of friendship, defining it as a virtue and a necessity of life. According to Aristotle, no one can choose to live without friends, even after having all other possessions in life (Aristotle, 2006). He describes how there is no relevance of justice among friends. Even though people need friendships; hence, true friendship can be described as justice in the fullest sense. According to Aristotle, there are different varieties of friendship as associated with pleasant, good, and convenience. Other than for an individual’s good people can be liked for their usefulness or for the pleasure they can come with. He also stresses on the fact that in cases where individuals are only liked for the pleasure or convenience that they bring, they are hardly loved for who they are in their nature (Aristotle, 2006). These, according to Aristotle, are accidental friendships and are only initiated on the grounds that they provide pleasure or…

A Case for Egoism and Utilitarianism The subject of morality is a tough one since what is considered right or wrong is profoundly subjective and differs from one person to another. This has necessitated the formulation of moral theories that attempt to explain how and why we view right and wrong the way we do. These theories have had a profound effect on our understanding of morality and have been instrumental in resolving conflicts and ensuring people live peaceably. However, these theories fundamentally vary, and their approach to morality can be quite different. The most popularly accepted normative theory of ethics is perhaps utilitarianism. However, a keener investigation exposes its imperfections and necessitates the intervention of other moral arguments to tackle problems within and beyond the workplace. One such useful ethical philosophy is egoism, which has been massively overlooked and unappreciated over the years. In today’s capitalistic society, it would be remiss not to notice the prevalence of egoism in virtually every aspect of life. The moral philosophy of egoism advances self-interest as the ultimate factor for determining the rightness…

The role of the Catholic Church in Formation of Conscience The general concept of conscience is a term that describes self-awareness. In Christianity however, the definition goes a notch deeper. In Christianity, conscience is the internal rational capacity of a person that gives room for the voice of God (Carter, 2014). Some years ago, there was a common trend in films or classic comics where the main character had the trouble of making a significant decision. On each shoulder of the cast would appear an animated version of the figure where the dark one would represent temptation whereas the brighter one would serve conscience. Therefore, conscience is a God-given innate ability that enables the inner self to recognize between right or wrong. The Catholic Church defines conscience explicitly as a judgment of reasons whereby a person acknowledges the best quality of a concrete act that one is about to do in the process of doing or already done. All Christians, regardless of their denomination, have the Holy Bible as their guide. They follow the teachings and rely on it to…

NATIONAL CULTURE AS MODERATOR BETWEEN SOCIAL NORM, RELIGIOSITY, AND TAX EVASION: META-ANALYSIS STUDY    Abstract. The research purpose is to present meta-analysis results of the relationship between social norms and religiosity on tax evasion using national culture as a moderator variable. The previous results showed mixed results about the relationship between social norms, religiosity, and tax evasion. Meta-analysis is considered as a way out of saturated and inconsistent research because it provides an efficient and systematic approach to provide robust conclusions. This research is synthesizing a total of 54 results from 14 individual articles published from 1989 to 2017. This study shows three main findings. Although social norms are not effective in combating tax evasion, religiosity is a useful tool in decreasing tax evasion. Theoretically, national culture plays a vital role as moderating variables of social norm and religiosity on tax evasion. Still, this variable cannot moderate the relationship between both two independent variables and tax evasion. These findings show that the theory of planned behavior is inconsistent in predicting the influence of social norms on tax evasion. In practice,…

According to the United Nations Statistics, more than 1.1 billion of the earth’s population live in extreme poverty conditions caused by various issues like war, natural calamities, and such. The reason why poverty continues to be a significant problem, which I think will last for many years, is that first of all, unemployment rates continue to go high as years progress.
