Causes of School Dropout
Dropping out of school is a decision brought about by some circumstances that come along the path of some student’s studies. Some are unavoidable while a student deliberately makes others to suit their desires or anything related to that. At some point in my educational process, I ever once became a victim of circumstances that saw me drop out of school in high school for two years straight. The decision to completely cut off my academic pursuance was contributed by factors from either extreme of the scale.
Financial difficulties faced by some families lead to their children opting to abandon their studies and focus on getting money to meet their basic needs. Getting a casual job to help these children feed and take care of their families always remains as the last choice between going on with studies and putting food on the table. Back in high school, I had a significant challenge when my family instantly ran out of finances. That was only one year after my father lost a job. Given he was the breadwinner, I guess almost everything almost came to a standstill. The fancy life we used to live and the way we would afford every basic need was at this time a thing of the past.
Regarding the mentioned situation, I landed in moments when I would be pondering over whether the next meal would be available or not after taking one. Depression came next. I had no choice but to leave any affair concerned with classroom and headed to the streets to secure a living for myself and my siblings.. In other cases, drugs come along as causative agents for the rising rates of dropouts, especially among the high school teens. Perhaps, I was an addict the same time I quit school. I had little hopes in studies prior to the moment depression saw me pack and leave. Smoking bhang along chronic alcohol drinking was an order of my teenage days. The vision for my future with academics was getting blurred with every subsequent day. Nothing seemed to make sense to me as long as education was concerned.
Concerning the issue, at times, students tend to get tired of the course whenever they find out that their performances do not appear to improve despite their consistent efforts. This case happened to one of my closest friends earlier before I had thought I would once be a dropout victim. He gave up on academics terming the process unfruitful for him. The latter came after series of hard work and serious dedications that never ended in a better score.
That being said, the stigma and isolation faced by students with disabilities most at times find them at a crossroad of decisions. Most of them opt to stay away from school to avoid the mentioned situation. More so, manoeuvring around school compound and all that relates to flexible movement is rocket science for such students. So far, I have had one encounter of this case. I saw a student in my neighbourhood lament about how difficult it was for him to stay in school following the stigmatization he experienced from his classmates and almost everyone in the school. It was way much better for him not to choose otherwise but to drop from school. His crippled legs never gave him the flexibility of movement, and that also came as a challenge that led to the contemplation of staying away from academics and pursuing peace of mind.
In general, my life experience in school was way too smooth until the financial crisis hit my family. One thing led to another, afterwards, that is, particularly in the line of academic and schooling process. Dropping out is basically a tough decision to make. Presumably, it comes after the persistence of a circumstance or two and in which a student has no other way of thinking academically but rather choose to quit. Based on my experience, dropping out of school is not an overnight decision. It comes after some circumstantial persistence.
