CEO MANAGEMENT STYLES FOR STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING

Describe McNerney’s management style in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Would you like to work for him?

According to Arndt (2004), McNerney, the CEO of 3M Corp Company, was identified as ‘one of those boys’ in his article. One of the strengths that McNerney had is that he could find new methodologies to restore discipline and focus within the company. Also, he knew what to embark on when under anxiety and establish something useful out of an unfortunate circumstance. Arndt (2004) indicates that the first time McNerney took over as the CEO, the revenues were over 35%. Generally, McNerney had many strengths in comparison to weaknesses. Some of the flaws he had included, firstly, he ever reflected ahead of everybody within the corporation. Secondly, he had a sharp mind full of alternatives and always anticipated the best long term for the corporation. Several individuals perceive the weakness to be advantageous. In this presented case, it worked perfectly for McNerny, hence making him prosper. However, several individuals do not prefer change, and they always thought that whatever the CEO was undertaking was hazardous. The other demerit aligns itself to the level of life McNerney was in a while at 3M. Therefore, the company was fearful that he could depart for another professional chance since it was a golden time season in his life.

According to Arndt (2004), someone was always doing wrongful acts on McNerney during his time at 3M Corps. Despite that and other challenges, he still did well for the company to make it more prosperous. His good deeds outshined the few disadvantages; no wonder he was ever prosperous. Considering what I have learned from McNerney’s style of leadership, I can comfortably confirm that it would be my pleasure to work for him. McNerney amasses me with his exceptional skills in the trading industry. Eventually, working for an individual like him, you could learn excellent business management skills regarding strategic decision making.

Describe McNealy’s management style in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

Would you like to work for him?

Scott McNealy, chief executive officer of Sun Microsystem Corporation, acted differently from the other business people. If it were not for the challenges which trounced him, McNealy would have become more successful. One of his biggest strengths he knew how to successfully compete in the market by co-founding the sun Microsystem the same way as McNerney. The only mistake that McNerney committed is the failure to look for solutions to the problems. He possessed a lot of weaknesses; one of them he did not keep on trying after failing several times (Burrows, 2004). When the company’s revenues were decreasing, he did not put more effort into ensuring the company continues withs operations. Therefore, this resulted in a loss of about $5 billion. From the article, McNerney seems to be a smart guy, but he failed to get out of that situation (Burrows, 2004). He could have improved Sun Microsystem if he had undertaken some risks. When McNealy resigned as the CEO of Sun Microsystem Inc, many talks took place. I would consider working with Mr. McNealy. I love the CEO who I can enable me to learn and gain the necessary experience. Therefore, when the company faces challenges such as losses, I will be able to try and look for some new ways of maintaining the company. Thus, this will ensure that the company continues to be competitive in the market and not just to leave the organization and its employees in a dilemma with no option to undertake.

Referring to the attached Management Style Matrix, is McNerney’s style appropriate for 3M?  Where do you find this style on the matrix?  Explain your answer

Yes. His form of management worked well for the company, and the results were excellent. According to Fox (2004), the style is available at the top management team section. He exhibited great leadership, problem-solving/critical thinking, and listening skills

Is McNealy’s style appropriate for Sun Microsystems?  Where do you find his style on the matrix?  Explain your answer

No. His management style did not bear any fruit for the Sun Microsystems company. Therefore, it led to a loss of losses. The best matrix would be that one of top-down. The classifying factor relies on the fact that some times, he was somehow successful (Wooldridge, 2020).

Conclusion concerning the appropriateness and correctness of the two management styles

In general, both McNealry and McNerney seem to be successful business CEOs. The only notable disparity is that one, McNerney, knew how to deal with anxiety and also develop a competitive advantage within the business industry. On the other hand, McNealy was unable to get things done at his company. Hence the returns for the corporation indicated losses all along with his tenure as the CEO. Notably, the two CEOs had different management styles, and the results conspicuously proofed that McNerney was very prosperous, unlike his counterpart, Mr. McNealy, who performed averagely. Therefore, it could be of great importance to recommend the top management team (TMT) style of leadership since it is efficient in solving challenges and making better decisions with an organization.
