Challenges in Houston and Harris
Houston is among the fastest-growing, diverse in the county. Its population is about 6,892.427, which adds about 259 visitors every. It is the second in terms of population growth in that particular nation. The trend of population growth is expected to continue. Houston is said to be among the ethnically diverse, places with a population of 37% Hispanic, 8% Asian, 17% black, and 37% white. Houston and Harris are faced with very many challenges, in which some are as a result of the rapid population growth rate and others by nature.
Traffic congestion is among the main challenges. (Houston, &Robert. Npg)A transport network cannot accommodate, rapid-population growth resulting in aging infrastructure and blockage, which hinders the day to day activities. It is said to be the biggest problem facing the people in the region. There are opportunities for improvement which lie in transformative projects, for example, pipeline, transportation department, and north-way project for development, among others. But implementation remains a challenge.
Houston and Harris suffer from affordable house stock shortages. A particular report shows that for each 100 low- income renter, only 19 units affordable were available. A survey done shows that in Harris, about 306,000 households had housing problems. And about 989,210 households were cost-burdened.
Houston and Harris experience environmental pollution and climate change, with heavy industries situated along the ship channel. Neighborhoods and communities who are on western areas in Houston have suffered from environmental-pollution for decades. (Persson,& Diane633-646).
Areas on the Golf coast are vulnerable to climate change effects like storm surge, rising sea levels, and increasing severity of weather events.
The growth of Houston has not occurred justifiably. There are inequalities, for instance, in health care, education, housing, and job opportunities. All these problems should be addressed for Houston to grow to occur equitably and sustainably.
