What Makes a Good/Great nurse?

Nursing is by no means an integral career that is ignored, but it’s important to know that being a nurse calls for a caring attitude, empathy, a person of integrity and high degree of trust. Therefore becoming a nurse is not just a career but a calling. Nurses are on the frontline taking care of patient’s day in day out with great dedication and a heart full of compassion.

If we take the current situation that the whole world is facing, the Covid 19 challenge that has been a menace, nurses are being looked upon to offer support, emergency care, and also show empathy to the devastated patients.

There must be some traits that prove that one is a great nurse which is unique, and few nurses will exhibit such characteristics.  These traits are explained here below;

  1. Excellent communication skills

If there is any skill that a nurse must possess is excellent communication skills. This is because; it will enable them to communicate clearly with the patients, understand their problem and offer a solution.   This is what determines the better part of his/her works. Unless they understand the patient’s woes, they will not be able to administer or offer solutions.

  1. Must possess high standards of professionalism

Nurses must portray a high degree of professionalism. Taking into account that they are dealing with people’s lives and in case they mess up, then that patient is gone forever. They must be skilled, be aware of the patients they are dealing with and most importantly, know how to handle their issues concerning medicine administration, maintaining proper records and having a professional relationship with the patients.

  1. Diligence

No matter how much a nurse gets tired, one thing for sure remains, that working hard is never an option for them. While other professionals are free to work from 9 to 5, this is not so for nurses. They will work for long hours, never complain and be energetic for the next day’s duty.

This calls for discipline and diligence because they know that failure to doing so, is putting the lives of the patients at risk

With the demand of nurses in the current crisis, this character trait has been seen in many hospitals and they have been applauded for handling clients whose risk of infecting them with the coronavirus is real.

Much as the career may look hard, having these traits makes it fulfilling and rewarding.
