Childhood Memories
I clearly remember my childhood as days filled with joy. We lived in a small neighborhood and I enjoyed the company of my family and friends. My family composed of my father, my mother, my elder sister and my younger brother. I was the middle child. Memories that I specifically enjoyed that I still hold dear up to today are Christmas memories. Christmas was a season that brought a lot of joy in my family. My siblings and I always looked forward to this time of the year.
Christmas preparations began early in my family, approximately one week before Christmas day. My father and I would go to shop for food and some decorations that we would need for the event. The stores were usually well decorated with Christmas messages on the doors walls and ceilings, some stores even had very attractive Christmas trees well decorated with Christmas lights. I was always mesmerized with these lights, going on and off consecutively, their different colors, red, green, yellow blue and orange. Every chance I got I would stare at these lights. Most times my father had to take me out of my trance by holding my hand as we left.
After the trip to the store, we would get home and start decorating the house. There were specific decorations that I loved to make made out of paper. One had to create this decorations using two strips of paper. The papers had to have two different lively colors and then we intertwined them. It came out beautifully and my sister and I would hang these in our room. It was an art activity that I enjoyed doing. My father and brother were always the ones who decorated the Christmas tree each year.
On the night of Christmas eve, I would watch my mother mix the dough that she would use to bake a cake and some cupcakes meant for the next day. Most times I went to sleep and left her to it. We would wake up the next day and enjoy the delicacies. Most Christmas seasons, family members visited us and my siblings and I would play with our cousins. I was always ecstatic to open my gift on boxing days. I remember one time my mother bought me a toy car that I had wanted for quite some time. I played with it for several days not wanting anyone to touch it. It was truly the best gift ever.
