Childhood Obesity Assessment

Steps in Community Organizing

To solve the problem of childhood obesity in the community, there is a need to learn and integrate with the community for easier interaction. There are three main steps to organize a community during need assessment, which include entering into the community, integrating with the people, and situation analysis of the community. When entering the Lincoln Elementary school in our case, there is a need to gather basic data such as the lifestyle of the students, school culture, and practices. Also, when entering the school, the team should not regard themselves as special or savior. The team members will act naturally and dress simply when entering school. For easier integration, the team will interact with the students by doing things that students like doing, like eating the same meal, playing together, and slowly start engaging the students to learn more about them (Sahota and Christian, 2019). After being integrated into the school, the team will recognize situations and issues that lead to childhood obesity. This will involve engaging the students and making them understand the importance of healthy weight.

Methods of organizing the people

Health needs cannot be solved without organizing the participants well. The four methods that the team will use to organize the students will include;

Developing the issue for the students most affected by the health condition. This will be done by listening to the student’s experiences about the issue and challenges of living with obesity (Sahota and Christian, 2019). After developing the assessment need, the group of students who would present themselves will be shown that they have enormous potential to overcome obesity.

The method will be creating the attention of the students with obesity condition by showing them the program that will be created will help them overcome the obesity problem and that the cost will be student-friendly. This will help the team in building a large membership for the students with the problem.

After building the base and registering several students, the team will organize the new members in small groups, and then they will try to understand each of the student’s concerns. Where possible, confidentiality should be maintained by dealing with one member at a time. This will help in creating close relationships with the members so that they can believe that the program created will address their concerns on obesity.

After understanding the problems and concerns of each member, the team should table down the problems and analyze them by researching the best way of dealing with each concern. For instance, finding out the school’s diet, the students’ diet at home, and whether the student is active or inactive when it comes to exercising.

Identification and Allocation of Resources

For this program to be a success, it will require both internal program personnel of the healthcare facility and external program staff. The internal program personnel will promote the objectives of the organization during the implementation of the childhood obesity reduction program. He or she will be required to lead the other team members from within and outside the healthcare to not only help the students who will be ready to participate in the health program but also to promote the organizational goals through the program. A team of internal employees will be selected and trained on how they will undertake the program for it to be a success.

External program staff will help in recruiting other health experts who will health the organization’s team to undertake the program successfully. The program will be aimed at recruiting and training employees with unique skills that the internal team does not possess. This will ensure that a comprehensive program will be provided to the members to help them achieve healthy weights like other students.

Space Requirement

The team will be allocated with the school’s hall where the students who have membered for obesity reduction program will be educated on how to manage and reduce the condition. The education program will take place in the hall every day from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. The school’s playing ground for different sports will then be used to make the students through rigorous physical exercises for burning excess calories. This will take place from 4 pm to 6 pm. Both school’s hall and the playing ground will be required to be available every day to help the students who have membered for the program deal with the health condition.

Equipment and Supplies

To facilitate better participation of the students, several equipment and supplies will be important. There will be a need for weight scales that can take the weights of obese students (Sahota and Christian, 2019). This will enable the team to check the weight of every member after one week, and see the progress of the members. Additionally, the hospital should provide a lot of clean water for the students to drink during physical exercises to avoid dehydration. Other important equipment that will be required in the field include exercising bikes, elliptical trainers, exercise balls, treadmill, and Stair Steppers (Norman, 2016).

Financial Resources

Participation fee: Students who will be willing to take part in the program will be required to contribute $2500 to facilitate all the activities of the operation.

Third-Party Support: The program will get a lot of support from both Actions for Health Kids-WA Chapter and American Academy of pediatrics _WA Chapter.

Cost Sharing: The cost of the program will be shared between the students who will be taking part in the program, the healthcare facility, and the program’s sponsors.

Sponsorship: The obesity prevention and management program will get sponsorship from the Texas Hospital Association. Some of the funds that will be obtained through sponsorship will be used to acquire equipment and supplies that would be used in physical exercises.

Grants: Grants will be accepted in the form of soft money through the hospital committee. The program will expect grants from many non-governmental organizations to aid paying the staff and cater to other expenses.

Seed Dollars-Start-up money: The hospital will invite investors to offer capital for the start-up of the program. In exchange, the investors will have a share in the program and will start receiving dividends once the program starts making profits.

Marketing

This program will be marketed through television, posters, radio, and magazine to attract other members of the nearby community who may need to take part in the program to deal with their overweight condition. The program’s ads will include everything that the potential clients may want, including where, when, and payment to join the program.

Budget

Components of implementation of the program will cost approximately $500,000.

Components of Implementation

Total Program

The obesity intervention program will apply the total program to enable the complete delivery of the intervention to the members. Through the use of a total program, the obesity intervention program will involve more of the community, and also an assessment of members will be easily generalized.

Informed Consent

Explain what the program is.

The aim of this program will be educating and helping students and community members with obesity conditions to overcome the health condition and gain a healthy weight. Members and students who are not obese but would like to take part in the program to keep them fit and reduce their risk of gaining too much weight. People with average weight aim to remain fit and also to understand the foods that they should take and not take to avoid taking too many calories that would lead to weight gain.

Inform the participants of any risk. (Explain)

The members who have registered for this program will be advised to be careful when using some of the supplies and equipment provided by the hospital as they cause injuries if the users do not take serious care. The members will be required to use the equipment provided for physical exercises as stipulated in the different equipment’s Manual.

Notify them of the expected benefits. (Explain)

Participating in this program will be beneficial to the participants because:

  • The program will help members to manage their obese conditions.
  • The program will assist those who have not developed the obese condition to remain fit and maintain their normal weight.
  • Participants will learn on a healthy diet and can help them avoid gaining too much weight.
  • The physical exercises will assist the students and other members of the community in remaining physically fit.

Avoid foods with too many calories, and exercising a lot at home for people who may be overweight is another alternative for this program.

No one will be forced to take part in the program. Participants are doing it for their benefit, and therefore, if anyone will feel like discontinuing the program, then the team cannot deny them their will.
