Children with ADHD

Summary

ADHD: Out of Control Kids is a documentary by Real Stories channel on YouTube depicting children with Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). The documentary shows the lives of children living with ADHD, the problems they face, and how they cope. Also, the documentary shows how ADHD affects the families of such children. Children diagnosed with ADHD tend to have problems due to their behaviors, affecting their not only their lives but their families and their friends.

In the beginning, we see Samantha, who was diagnosed with ADHD. Samantha, or Sam, is easily distracted and acts on impulse. Sam cannot be able to think of the consequences of her behavior, which makes her fall into trouble many times (Real Stories, 2017). In a week, Sam runs away from home three or four times, and she has no concept of danger. She can climb trees, climb to ceilings in the house and anything that comes to mind. This affects not only Sam, but also her parents since she needs constant supervision.

Kyle is another child with ADHD. Kyle was diagnosed with ADHD and is on medication. By the time Kyle was two years, he had started a fire and has had severe head injuries (Real Stories, 2017). According to his parents, Kyle is unmanageable and uncontrollable. Kyle cannot socialize with other children since he always causes trouble, and this makes his parents avoid taking him to social meetings (Real Stories, 2017). This will affect his development since he is at the stage where he is required to develop social skills.

From such cases, the video focuses on the effects of ADHD on the child and their families. Children with ADHD have a lot of social problems at home, in social gathering and school. They also affect the whole family socially, emotionally and financially. ADHD requires treatment with most preferring medication, as in the case of both Kyle and Sam.

Lessons Learnt

I have learnt that a child with ADHD has many problems causing other issues in the process. Children with ADHD have no concept of danger or consequence of their actions. This makes them do activities that are risky and can cause harm to them and others. Kyle, for instance, had already created a fire by the age of two and had had severe head injuries.

I have also learnt that children with ADHD cause a lot of emotional and social problems for entire families. Since the children are trouble makers, they are avoided by others, and thus their parents are usually reserved in taking them to social places. The parents fear their children will cause problems for other children. The children are also a danger to their siblings at home, as they can distract them or have a negative attitude towards their brothers and sisters.

The parents of children with ADHD have a hard time socializing. The children require a lot of supervision not to get into trouble or cause harm to themselves or others. This necessitates the parents to check on their children regularly, affecting their own social life.  Also, since the parents cannot go with such children to some social gatherings, the parents have to either not go or go without their children, affecting them both emotionally and socially.

I have also learnt that children with ADHD have problems in school, and this will ultimately affect their studies negatively.  Children with ADHD have problems concentrating for long affecting their academic performance. Their tendencies to cause trouble makes other children shun them, thus alienating them during playtime, and this affects their social skills and psychological growth.

Also, children with ADHD need supervision and medication. This means one of the parents has to stop working to check on the child or hire outside help. Also, medication requires finances. Both medication and supervision can drain a family’s finances, especially for the working class.

In conclusion, ADHD causes children to have social and attention problems which bring about other issues in their lives. Such children require professional help, through medication or other non-medical support. Also, the families of children with ADHD end up having other problems ranging from financial to social.
