China and Global Strategy to Reduce GHGs Emissions
Introduction
Global environmental issues have been subject of concern since the last century. Global environmental issues are factors that affect or increase environmental problems on a global scale and threaten the extinction of resources as well as humankind if not checked. A factor that has led to global environmental issues is the growing need for national development among countries leading to the increase in industries in countries such as China, America, and Japan, and deforestation in forested areas. One of the global issues this paper seeks to explore is global warming caused by greenhouse gases emission by China, which leads to climate change. Also, the paper will seek to explore how international organizations have tried to combat the issue of GHGs as well as the U.S. takes on the issue.
Body
- China is one of the leading countries in greenhouse gas emissions because of the increase in the number of manufacturing industries. According to Mohajan, China, “emits one-fifth of the world’s GHG emissions from power generation” (3). The country’s high emission has led to a negative impact on the climate of various regions in the country.
- Although China is a leading emitter of GHGs, it has taken steps to counter the issue. An article by the China Power Team states that the country has started “reducing carbon intensity by 40 to 45 percent and raising the share of non-fossil fuel energy sources to 15 percent” (2019). The country hopes to follow the Copenhagen accord and targets set to reduce its carbon emission rate by 2020.
- Similar to China, the U.S. has also made plans to reduce its carbon and greenhouse gases emission in accordance with international treaties such as the Kyoto Protocol. According to a New Yorker article by John Cassidy focuses on Obama’s administration steps in reducing carbon emission by having automobile makers design fuel-efficient cars (2014 para 2). By doing this, the country will greatly reduce its emission rate; thus, reducing global warming.
- On an international level, different organizations have helped create treaties and agreements that will help reduce carbon and GHGs emissions on a global scale. Such treaties include the Paris Agreement of 2015 and the Kyoto Protocol of 1997. However, in recent times, President Trump’s administration has started to take a step to pull out of the Paris Agreement to reduce GHGs emissions (Woodward 2019). Therefore, this will undermine the country’s efforts to reduce their GHGs emissions on a global scale.
Conclusion
China and international bodies have come up with ways and strategies to combat global environmental issues like global warming by reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. Global warming is caused by the increased rates of greenhouse gas emissions caused by world-leading industrialized countries like China. China has started to implement international agreements like the Copenhagen treaty to help reduce its carbon emission. Also, the U.S. government hopes to reduce its GHGs emission rate by having automobile manufacturers come up with technology to produce fuel-efficient vehicles. International treaties have been structured by international bodies like the UNEP to help control carbon emissions by member nations by having them sign agreements like the Paris treaty and the Kyoto protocol. Overall, these steps taken by China, the U.S., and international bodies will help counter the rate of global warming.
