Choosing a career

Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions one can make in their life. It is not only about deciding what we will do for a living but also the significance of satisfaction received from work cannot be disregarded. When I was in high school, I was always passionate about numbers and how the market works. So, I ended up opting for economics as an under graduation major. Economics teaches us to make well- informed decisions. It is a perfect combination of words and numbers, problems and solutions.

Although economics consists of several domains including microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and others, the part that caught my eye was the statistical and analytical part of my major. Even in the beginning, I enjoyed math and was looking for some fun ways to use numbers in my career. With that premise in mind, I decided to study Masters in Statistics as my next step.

Statistics is just what I dream of: a chance to use numeric analysis to almost any discipline and make affirmative solutions out of it.

I studied ‘Statistics for economics’ and ‘Econometrics’ as my core subjects in the second year and also opting for math-centred subjects like Data Analytics and Business Statistics from the elective option reveal my passion for the subject. Besides, I have learned a lot about the practical application of statistics through online courses of analytics and graphical representation of data using modern tools like Excel, Tableau, PowerPoint and more.

By engaging in a Research project in my semester-3 for the college magazine, performing primary surveys in slum areas near our city and creating statistical reports tvga statistical-programming language used for Data Science. This program included a certificate course and an internship – with Applications of R which reaffirmed my devotion toward Statistics and did leave some traction for the future.

Another aspect I have always devoted myself to is social work. With my passion for teaching, I participated in “MedhaviChhatraUnnayanKaryakram”, an initiative by SwarnimPrabhat Foundation for unprivileged students.

A statistician is listed among the Bureau of Labour Statistics’ fastest-growing careers in 2018 and is predicted to grow by 33 percent by 2026. This is the best time for a career in statistics, especially in a growing economy like India. The situation of the Indian Corporate world is very conductive to supplement my ambition when I return after completing my post-graduation.
